Women Can Finally Drive in Saudi Arabia

Ban On Whatsapp & Skype Voice Calls to Be Lifted By Saudi Arabia

As of June, once the necessary legal and regulatory changes have been put in place, Saudi women will be able to drive themselves. Soon, She was arrested and detained for 73 days and she also said (In a Netflix Documentary - Saudi Arabia Uncovered) that she wasn't allowed to interact with anyone.

An Arabic Twitter hashtag asking women what vehicle they want to drive already had more than 22,000 responses on Thursday.

The exact make-up of said committee has not been made clear, nor has the reason why a committee and nine months are needed to roll out such a decree.

It stipulated that the move must "apply and adhere to the necessary Sharia standards", referring to Islamic law.

The reform is credited to 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who styles himself as a moderniser in the deeply conservative kingdom, where more than half the population is aged under 25.

As part of this plan, the kingdom has seen incremental steps over the past few years to relax some of its restrictions on women, such as including women in the Olympics team, expanding employment options for women, limited participation in local elections, and introducing physical education to girls in schools. "We did it", tweeted Manal Al-Sharif, a Saudi women's rights advocate who was imprisoned for her protests against the ban on female drivers.

The conservative religious kingdom has received global criticism for being the only country in the world that bans women from driving.

"We received this with lots of delight; it is a very symbolic step by Saudi Arabia toward strengthening the rights of women in the country", Mohammad Naciri, Regional Director for Arab States at UN Women, said.

But hundreds of thousands of male chauffeurs who drive women around, most from south Asia and the Philippines, risk losing their jobs. By rallying Saudi female activists to raise worldwide condemnation of the Kingdom's human rights practices, the government was left with no choice but to give women the right to drive cars.

The ban was justified for a glorious variety of reasons - from a cleric's claims that driving damages women's ovaries, to accusations that allowing our fairer sex to drive would result not only in society's swift moral demise but also that women are just so fundamentally bad at driving, they would wreak fatal havoc on the roads.

Saudi writer and journalist, Ghada Ghunaim said: "This will have a huge impact on Saudi Arabia's economy".

Without serious political reforms and real change in the laws, this decision is merely decorative for performance purposes.

"We would certainly welcome that", U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters. "In a context where women suffer from extreme gender inequality and male domination, gaining the freedom of movement - a basic human right - surely gives hope and impetus for women's rights in Saudi Arabia". He further added that Saudi Arabia will recognise driver's licenses issued to women in other Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
