Airlines get ready for new USA security rules from Thursday

Are you ready for the new TSA rules?

Previously, laptops had been banned in the cabin on flights originating in eight counties in the Middle East and North Africa.

They will affect 325,000 airline passengers on about 2,100 commercial flights arriving daily in the United States, on 180 airlines from 280 airports in 105 countries.

"The security measures affect all individuals, worldwide passengers and U.S. citizens, travelling to the United States from a last point of departure global location", said Lisa Farbstein, a spokeswoman for the TSA. People flying to United States on these carriers will also witness the new level of security. Officials gave airlines 120 days to comply with the measures; the deadline was October 26.

Even as airlines have no choice but to comply with the new rules, industry bodies like the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) have raised concerns about the impact of such measures. "It's just inconvenient for the passengers", President and Chief Operating Officer Walter Cho told Reuters in Taipei.

Now people on USA -bound flights could also face a Q&A, though with airline personnel. Along with the tour of Jerusalem, one of the world's most attractive cities, and dinner at a seaside fish restaurant in Tel Aviv, I encountered something else that I found interesting: Highly trained security officers interviewed passengers before flights and scrutinized bags in the country that endures so much strife. It could mean delays and headaches for travelers and airline companies.

The US government announced that travellers on all inbound global flights could be questioned by airline staff before being allowed to board aircraft.

The new rules also come at the end of a 120-day deadline for airlines to meet new U.S. regulations following the ban on laptops in airplane cabins of some Mideast airlines being lifted.

"What we have seen is very unusual", he told reporters in Taipei.

Virgin Atlantic has said the new rules won't disrupt customers.

AAPA includes most large Asian airlines but not mainland Chinese carriers.

The TSA said in July it was imposing new security rules requiring US domestic airline travelers to remove all electronic items larger than mobile phones such as tablets, e-readers and video game consoles from carry-on baggage for screening.

Travellers may also be asked to switch off their electronic devices, including phones.
