Anti-nuclear weapons campaign wins Nobel Peace Prize

Dr. Ira Helfand speaks earlier this year at a rally in Springfield. Helfand is a member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons which received the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize

JUDY WOODRUFF: And yet all this is taking place in real time as North Korea, we are seeing a regime that looks at nuclear weapons as absolutely essential for its survival, and then the United States, President Trump, looking at North Korea and saying, you make a false move and we're going to come back at you, we're going to come at you.

As part of its work to push for the nuclear prohibition treaty, ICAN launched in 2012 the campaign "Don't Bank on the Bomb", pushing for divestment from hundreds of banks, pension funds and insurance companies with investments in companies producing nuclear arms.

"The more countries we can rally to reject nuclear weapons and the more public opinion changes to think that this is unacceptable, the harder it is going to be for the nuclear-armed states to justify it", she said.

He says "people do not realize what we're talking about here; we're talking about a global suicide machine".

The Norwegian Nobel committee holds that ICAN-formed coalition, officially launched in 2007 in Vienna, "has been a driving force for nations of world to commit to cooperate with all stakeholders in efforts to Stigmatize, prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons".

The leaders of North Korea and the United States are threatening to set each other's countries aflame.

It is a grassroots movement operating in over 100 counties, that helped lobby for the 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

If this weren't enough, US President Donald Trump is expected next week to withdraw his endorsement of the Iran nuclear deal.

In Japan, the only country to suffer an atomic bombing in the closing days of World War II, this year's Nobel Peace Prize resonated with many. ICAN's website crashed, as people around the world started researching the organisation named as the "driving force" behind the signing of the historic United Nations treaty.

He congratulated the Bangladesh government for signing the nuclear disarmament treaty. The State Department spokesman added that Washington remains committed to its obligations under the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty. However that's not stopping his continual fight for a nuclear-free world.

ICAN, an global nongovernmental organization headquartered in Geneva, won the award for its decade-long push for the treaty to take effect. The historic nuclear weapons ban treaty was signed by 122 countries in July.

In fact, the CBS is against use of all types of nuclear technology, Arup told The Daily Star. Several nuclear powers, including the US, UK and France, boycotted the signing ceremony.

As the magazine pointed out, there was deep history behind that decision: Alfred Nobel is said to have endowed the Peace Prize specifically as "penance" for having introduced dynamite into the world; it would thus be "embarrassing" for the prize committee to honor the inventors of something being hailed as "super-dynamite".

State department [the equivalent of our ministry of foreign Affairs], the United States has made it clear that they will not sign the treaty for the prohibition of the atomic weapon forbidden by the worldwide Campaign to abolish nuclear weapons (Ican), an organization that rewarded this Friday with the Nobel peace prize.

The U.S. put special pressure to oppose the treaty on its allies in NATO, an alliance that depends at its core on a policy of nuclear deterrence - the threat of retaliation in kind for any nuclear attack by an enemy.

"Following the introduction of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the test of a responsible nuclear weapons power will be its commitment to present concrete plans for progressing towards a world without nuclear weapons".
