Argentina striker Aguero to miss crucial World Cup qualifiers

Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola

In a statement, City said Aguero was in Holland "on his day off" and Guardiola was adamant his star had done nothing wrong.

"I spoke with (Belgium manager) Roberto Martinez who told me he's travelling there to make a meeting with the Belgian doctor but he's coming back".

Goal can confirm that Aguero has suffered a broken rib as a result of the accident that happened in the Netherlands, with the Argentine to be assessed by City medical staff on Friday.

"I don't know, I am not a doctor, I don't know exactly what he has". Fortunately, he will come back and recover as soon as possible.

"I think the players have to rest mentally and physically. If he decides to go there, that's OK with me". The injury could also put Aguero in jeopardy for global appearances with Argentina.

He'll now have to wait to pass that tally and it has been reported City will be without his services for around two months following the crash in the De Boelelaan area of Amsterdam.

Media in Aguero's home country Argentina have been covering the accident, although the incident has yet to be confirmed to British media.

Aguero had posted a picture of himself with the singer to his Instagram account earlier in the evening thanking him for an invitation.

Independiente, the Argentine club where Aguero began his career, wished the striker a "speedy recovery" on Twitter and added: "All Independiente is with you at this hard time".

The Aguero blow comes after City discovered this week that France defender Benjamin Mendy ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in last weekend's win over Crystal Palace.

Guardiola said the French global would have surgery on Friday and be out until April.

The 29-year-old is now chasing City's all-time scoring record, lying just one strike behind the mark set by Eric Brook, who netted 177 times for the club between 1927 and 1940.

Two months on the sidelines would mean not only missing Saturday's crucial trip to Chelsea but also matches against Arsenal in the Premier League and Napoli in the Champions League.

And the manager confirmed that Aguero would be unavailable for Argentina for their final World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Ecuador, with the Albiceleste now outside the automatic qualifying places for Russian Federation.
