Oil Change International Reacts to the Cancellation of Energy East

The proposed route of the Energy East pipeline was shared with the media at an Aug. 2013 press conference with Trans Canada officials

"The abandonment of the Energy East project is a major victory for the municipal world", Coderre said.

Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers CEO Tim McMillan said the Energy East cancellation would force Canada to rely more on the U.S.to be it's "broker" for oil and gas produced domestically at a time when the North American Free Trade agreement is being renegotiated.

Regarding the Energy East pipeline, Lisa Raitt, deputy leader of Canada's conservative opposition, called it a awful day for Canada and blamed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for not championing the nation-building project and the nation's energy sector.

The premiers of Alberta and New Brunswick expressed disappointment over the decision, while the Opposition Conservatives blasted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government for "disastrous" energy policies that they blame for lost jobs and investment.

Canada's Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr said the cancellation was a business decision and oil markets had changed since the pipeline was first proposed.

"TransCanada knows that Energy East would never receive approval if all its climate pollution was taking into account", Adam Scott, a senior campaigner with Oil Change International, a nonprofit research and advocacy group that looks at the impacts of fossil fuels, told ThinkProgress.

Energy East would have given oil producers in Alberta and Saskatchewan, who are heavily dependent on buyers in the US, another market for their crude by carrying about 1.1 million barrels a day to refineries and a marine-shipping terminal in eastern Canada.

The Liberals are defending jobs while protecting the environment, Trudeau insisted during question period, but "the market conditions have changed fundamentally" since the pipeline was proposed, including a steep drop in oil prices, he said. "You can't just come in and say, 'OK, we're going to do this.' And you have to adapt your project to the realities of the local governments", adding that they would have to "adapt to the realities and the legislative context of individual provinces". Nothing has changed in the Government's decision-making process. Speaking to reporters Thursday morning in Montreal, he said the decision was also the result of leadership from his city and other municipalities who insisted on getting reforms to the National Energy Board to ensure a fair process.

Calgary-based TransCanada had announced last month that it was suspending its efforts to get regulatory approvals for the mega projects.

Supporters said the pipeline was necessary to decrease reliance on the USA, which takes 97 percent of Canada's energy exports.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley also decried Energy East's demise, calling it "an unfortunate outcome for Canadians" and saying that it would have reduced the nation's imports of foreign oil.

"We are disappointed with this decision", says Ian Whitcomb, President of Irving Oil. His government has been trying to balance the oil industry's desire to tap new markets with environmentalists' concerns.

The company said it would take a C$1 billion after-tax non-cash charge in its fourth quarter.

June 16, 2016: The National Energy Board says it has officially started the clock on its review of Energy East.
