'Teething problems' for new GWR train to Wales

The new trains have a top speed of 125mph and up to 24 per cent more seating capacity than the High Speed Trains (HSTs) they replace.

Commuters were left frustrated after the Bristol to London train was held up for 41 minutes this morning, and to make matters worse, passengers also reported a leak from an air conditioning unit.

Due to budget cuts and delays, electrification has fallen short of the Bristol rail section so far.

Hitachi said the delay was due to a "minor technical issue".

"Hitachi will be investigating this matter thoroughly".

Great Western Railway's brand new Intercity Express Train has carried passengers for the first time, marking the next stage in the biggest fleet upgrade on the Great Western in 40 years.

"These trains have been running successfully on United Kingdom tracks for over two years and recently passed the industry standard 5,000 miles running without a fault".

He added: "These new state-of-the-art trains show our commitment to put passengers at the heart of everything that we do".

Hitachi said the train had been taken to its depot in West London for maintenance.

The new trains will operate initially between South Wales and London Paddington, and between Bristol Temple Meads and London Paddington.
