Twitter issues report on phony accounts, spam after Congress meeting

The House Intelligence Committee ranking member Rep. Adam Schiff D-Calif. leaves a closed door meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington Tuesday

"We know there is a huge appetite for more transparency into how Twitter fights bots and manipulative networks", the post said. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, however, said that trump will not be among the users who are testing the new feature.

The report emerged just hours after Twitter officials appeared before congressional investigators on Thursday saying the company found around 200 accounts with possible links to Russian Federation.

But Facebook recently found 470 accounts and more than 3,000 ads that likely have ties to Russian Federation.

The comments signalled that the congressional investigations into Russia's use of social media platforms would not ease up.

Twitter looked into the Russian-linked accounts on Facebook and found 22 corresponding accounts on Twitter. The company says an additional 179 Twitter accounts were linked to those 22, and accounts violating Twitter's rules were shut down.

Mark Warner, D-Va., criticized Twitter's information as merely a follow-up to what Facebook had already disclosed.

Warner said that Twitter's presentation appeared mostly derived from Facebook's previous disclosures, showing "an enormous lack of understanding on the Twitter team of how serious this issue is, the threat it poses to democratic institutions, and again, begs many more questions".

A Russian media group with links to the Moscow government spent $274,000 in 2016 on Twitter ads which may have been used to try to influence the United States election, the social media firm said Thursday.

According to Twitter, RT News spent roughly $US274,100 ($349,067) on ads past year and promoted 1,823 tweets that "definitely or potentially" targeted Americans. In his letter to the CEO [VIDEO] of Facebook, Twitter and Google's parent company Alphabet, Smith wrote that Russian ads reflect "the Russian government's concern about the impact of fracking". Officials from Twitter are set to meet behind closed doors Thursday with Senate Intelligence investigators.

"This is an ongoing process and we will continue to collaborate with investigators", the company said in a statement. Twitter said the 1,823 Tweets RT promoted were not in violation of Twitter's terms of service. "As patterns of malicious activity evolve, we're adapting to meet them head-on", said the blog post from Twitter.

Despite Twitter's effort to deface bots and networks of manipulation on the website, Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, criticised the company's response as insufficient.
