Two officers fired after United Airlines dragging incident; another quits

Two Aviation Officers Fired, Two Suspended For Dragging Doctor Off United Flight

Dr. David Dao was reportedly selected randomly to give up his seat because the airline needed the seat for a member of a different flight crew.

Inspector General Joseph Ferguson, who heads the midwestern United States city's watchdog office, had been pursuing an internal probe of the officers' actions.

The second officer, on the other hand, was accused of making two conflicting statements which were found in two separate reports and were meant to mislead the investigation and throw it off-track.

CNN reports that the employees - three Department of Aviation security officers and a sergeant - were found by the city's Office of Inspector General to have "mishandled a nonthreatening situation that resulted in a physically violent forcible removal of a passenger".

Video of the incident, which shows the 69-year-old being dragged off the flight by security officers as passengers looked on horrified, went viral and made worldwide headlines.

The report stated that along with the firing of two officers, two others received short suspensions and one of them subsequently resigned. The other challenged his suspension, which was reduced to two days.

Thomas Demetrio, Dao's attorney, said video evidence is what doomed the officers.

"There is a lesson to be learned here for police officers at all levels", Demetrio said. Do not state something that is clearly contrary to video viewed by the world.

The incident had stemmed from what would normally have been a fairly routine occurrence.

And United has vowed to not call airport security - or remove a passenger who is already seated on the plane - unless it's a matter of safety and security.

The process usually takes place at the gate before passengers board the plane. He refused to give up his seat and that's when the violent removal happened.

Viral video of the bloody encounter caused an global uproar and a firestorm of negative publicity for United. The incident was spread widely on social media and became a major embarrassment for the airline.

In a video that quickly went viral, officials were seen dragging Dao, bruised and bloodied, down the aisle of his United Airlines jet on the ground at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
