White House Demands for DACA Deal Include Border Wall

Sen. Bob Corker R-Tenn. talks to reporters on June 21

In a statement, Democratic leaders Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Cali.) and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), rebuked the list as "anathema to the Dreamers, to the immigrant community and to the vast majority of Americans".

And he hopes to prevent immigrants from sponsoring extended family members to move to the USA, limiting such green cards to spouses and children, as well as to close "loopholes" that prevent the deportation of children who enter the country illegally.

Border wall funding in particular was ruled out during a previous discussion with Trump, the lawmakers added.

Last month, the Trump administration said that it would end DACA and gave Congress six months to come up with immigration legislation.

"It's an extension of the white supremacist agenda - what they want to do is criminalize and delegitimize Latinos", Gutierrez said in an interview Sunday following Trump's announcement.

The White House also wants legislation to more quickly deport undocumented immigrant children apprehended at the border, many of whom are fleeing violence in Central America, the New York Times reported.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) programme, set up in 2012 under President Barack Obama, is due to expire in March, casting doubt on the future of those protected.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairwoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-New Mexico) also slammed Trump's proposal and said his "draconian and anti-immigrant principles jeopardize the bi-partisan, bi-cameral progress that has been made to pass a legislative solution that will protect almost 800,000 Dreamers", according to Fox News.

In early September, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that DACA was being rescinded, which meant that about 800,000 immigrants who entered the country as minors and had stayed on-and who, at this point, knew no other life-would lose their ability to work legally in the USA and, in some cases, have their driver's licenses revoked.

White House aides told reporters the proposals were necessary to protect public safety and jobs for American-born workers.

Trump has moved to tense up border security through executive orders. On that night, the president agreed to remove a request for more funding of a border wall while also protecting DACA, allowing them to stay in the country with a path to citizenship. Immigration hawks feared Mr Trump would support a Bill that would allow Dreamers to gain full legal status, without asking for major border security measures in return. Charles E. Schumer of NY said in a statement.

But the president has long made a wall the centerpiece of his immigration reform, insisting it must be a part of any legislation to protect dreamers like Greisa Martinez Rosa from deportation.
