7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Iran and Iraq, Tremors Felt in Israel

Armenian PM extends condolences to First Vice-President of Iran on devastating earthquake

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif thanked foreign countries offering to help but wrote on Twitter: "For now, we are able to manage with our own resources".

In the result of a powerful natural disaster with a magnitude of 7.3, which occurred on the border of Iraq and Iran killed at least 68 people, injured about 1,000.

Iran's sporting community has always been beside the people during natural calamities such as the 2003 Bam quake in Bam City, Kerman Province, in which more than 26,000 were killed and over 30,000 were injured. "The most urgent need is to provide solutions for heating, housing and food", Pir Hossein Koolivand, the head of national rescue services, told state television.

But more aid was still needed. In General, we are talking about a sparsely populated mountainous region.

The Mehr housing project was implemented under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's administration (2005-13) to provide cheap housing to low-income families.

"More people will die because of cold". Many warned that the low-quality construction could be problematic.

Asked by CHRI why no help had been sent to the villages, the reporter replied: "I don't know why no aid had been sent there". Authorities said Iran's armed forces will be sent to help remove rubble. Hundreds of critically injured people were dispatched to hospitals in Tehran. "You can hear children crying, it's too cold".

"Even in Sarpol-e Zahab, there were not enough tents and goods for the affected people", said the reporter. Iranian army helicopters are taking part in the relief effort. "But the villages would not be seeing any help until the next day". For more on these we turn to our Ro Aram...

Moreover, two major Iranian football clubs Esteghlal and Persepolis, provided 2,000 blankets to be distributed among people, in the quake-stricken regions in western Iran, whose houses have been damaged and who are left without shelter in the cold weather.

By Monday, officials said all the roads in Kermanshah province had been reopened.

Thousands of homes were destroyed in the quake, which rocked a region spanning Iran's western province of Kermanshah and neighboring Iraqi Kurdistan. "We got some cheese and bread from the stores that had not been destroyed and gave most of it to the kids".

Ali Gulani, 42, lives in the province's badly-hit town of Qasr-e-Shirin, and told BBC Persian people were burning crates to try to stay warm.

Akbari said that in addition to medicine, water and food, the city needs 6,000 blankets and tents for emergency settlements for the people of two nearby towns and 25 villages devastated by the natural disaster.
