CT attorney general investigating Uber breach: spokeswoman

Uber hacked, data for 57 million people exposed

Hackers have stolen personal data for 57 million Uber customers and drivers, the ride-hailing company said Tuesday.

U.S. Representative Frank Pallone called on Wednesday for a hearing into Uber Technologies Inc's handling of a breach that exposed data about drivers and riders. Among those, the hackers stole 600,000 driver's license numbers of drivers for the company.

Uber chief executive Data Khosrowshahi, who took on the role in September this year, told Bloomberg: "None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it".

The news was then confirmed by the company, which explained that in October 2016, two individuals outside the company had inappropriately accessed user data stored on a third-party cloud-based service that Uber used.

The severity of the incident was compounded amidst revelations that the company had paid $US100,000 ($A132,000) to the hackers to delete the data.

The decision to cover up the hack was led by Uber's former chief executive Travis Kalanick and chief security officer Joe Sullivan, who has since been fired.

Tuesday's data breach revelations are yet another setback for Uber, a private company that is valued at about $70 billion.

"While I can't erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every Uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes", he said.

At the time of the data breach, Uber was negotiating with US regulators investigating separate claims of privacy violations.

One of those actions was to terminate the two unnamed employees whose responsibility it was to respond security incidents, including the one that occurred in late 2016.

"We are very concerned about it and we're certainly going to inquire further", said James Boffetti, the senior assistant attorney general in charge of the bureau.

Joe Sullivan, chief security officer, and his deputy hid the cyberattack as USA regulators investigated Uber for a different set of privacy violation claims.

"We are pressing them for the full details of what has happened so that we can be satisfied that all the right protections are in place for the personal data of drivers and customers in London", a Transport for London spokesman said. "Interestingly here it's the fact that Uber covered up the breach that seems to have got people's backs up, clearly showing how important honesty is when dealing with such incidents".

Jeremiah Grossman, chief of security strategy at security firm SentinelOne, says this was not a sophisticated hack.

Schneiderman's office determined that the earlier hack took advantage of access information posted by an Uber engineer at software development platform Github. "Deliberately concealing breaches from regulators and citizens could attract higher fines for companies", said Dipple-Johnson.

Khosrowshahi inherited a litany of scandals and a toxic workplace culture when he replaced Kalanick.
