Facebook anti-revenge porn test "remembers" users' nude photos

Facebook suggests users upload nudes to avoid revenge porn

They're storing the link and using artificial intelligence and other photo-matching technologies. They will then tell you to send the nudes to yourself on Facebook, and will let Facebook know you've done this.

According to the Office of the e-safety commissioner, one in five Australians aged between 16 and 49 is a victim of IBA. It's worth noting that Facebook already has mechanisms for reporting revenge porn without preemptively sending them the images.

It's not known if the new pilot project in Australia will come to Canada or the U.S.

The social media company is right now testing the new strategy in Australia where it is working in collaboration with the office of the e-Safety Commissioner to device methods so that revenge porn can be dealt with.

Facebook is asking its users for nude photos. Why?

"Revenge porn" is horrendous enough as it is, without technology companies making the problem worse.

Australia's e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said Facebook is not storing the images, but only a digital footprint of them.

Facebook won't store the image, just the digital fingerprint.

It works like this: you send Facebook your nudes, the company's software has a look and then image matching algorithms will continuously comb the site to make sure that no images matching your nudes are posted. If anyone tries to upload the picture once it has been hashed, Facebook is able to check the code against its database and block it. But, it still remains to be seen how confident users are in giving their intimate images and videos to Facebook, considering Facebook's bad reputation with regards to privacy and consumer trust.

Facebook has previously taken steps to tackle revenge porn, launching a series of tools in April of this year that allow users to report intimate images posted without consent. If the same photo is uploaded then it will thwart the same and prevent it from distribution.

My hope and expectation is that Facebook will automate the process as much as possible, but that there may need to be some human involvement to review submitted images. Once Facebook gets that notification, a community operations analyst will access the image and hash it to prevent future instances from being uploaded or shared.
