Following US attack, Trump warns against the return of ISIS

Trump calls New York attack suspect an 'animal' and signals scrapping lottery visa scheme

President Donald Trump on Thursday appeared to rule out sending the NY terrorism suspect to the USA military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after threatening a day earlier to send the alleged attacker to the detention center.

The suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, told investigators he was inspired by watching Islamic State videos and began planning Tuesday's attack a year ago, according to the criminal complaint filed in federal court against him on Wednesday.

He added: "There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the awful crime he committed".

"Mr. President, we all know he should get the death penalty".

On Wednesday, Trump called the U.S. justice system a slow-moving "joke" and "laughingstock" and said he would be open to seeing Saipov transferred to the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where enemy combatants are tried by military tribunals.

In 1994, four men were sentenced to life in prison 15 months after they carried out a February 1993 World Trade Centre bombing that killed six people and injured over 1 000 others.

Sen. Lindsay Graham, a Republican, on Thursday repeated his criticism of the Justice Department for charging Saipov in the courts rather than treating him as an enemy combatant.

"It will endure." The phrase "it will endure" commonly refers to the Islamic State group, and Saipov had a cellphone loaded with the group's propaganda, an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent said in the criminal complaint.

"Send him to Gitmo - I would certainly consider that, yes", Trump said in response to questions from reporters.

Trump reiterated his pro-death penalty position Thursday morning, and added that he no longer supports moving the accused attacker to the prison at Guantanamo Bay because it could "take much longer". The Army sergeant's lawyers said candidate Trump's description of Bergdahl as a "dirty rotten traitor" who should be executed unfairly affected his trial.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday seized on the deadly New York City truck attack to step up demands for stricter USA immigration laws, asking Congress to end a visa program that let the Uzbek suspect into the country.

Tuesday's attack was the first terror strike inside the United States during Trump's presidency and was allegedly done in sympathy with Islamic State, also known as ISIS, the extremist group Trump has argued he has "on the run".

Mr Schumer also responded to Mr Trump's criticism by blasting the President for polticising the NY attack.

"We don't think there's any way you could discredit the progress that has been made", Sanders said, contending that the attack reinforced the need to adopt the president's policies.

"The folks in that unit working with the (New York Police Department) and the (Joint Terrorism Task Force) have a long and unblemished track record of successfully investigating and prosecuting domestic and global terrorists", Kim said.

The strongest sign yet that he is retreating from his earlier promise came Thursday, when Trump conceded that the civilian courts offer a swifter way to bring terror suspects to justice in the communities they attacked.

Of the hundreds of detainees held at Guantanamo since the September 11, 2001, attacks on NY and Washington, just eight have been convicted in military trials or admitted guilt by plea bargains, according to Human Rights watch. Trump's administration could, at least in theory, still send the suspect to the USA base in Cuba later, though such a step would be unprecedented.

The attack killed five people from Argentina, one from Belgium and two Americans, authorities said.
