Liberia Supreme Court indefinitely delays presidential vote

George Weah former soccer player and presidential candidate of Congress for Democratic Change, votes at a polling station in Monrovia

The extraordinary delay in electing Liberia's new leader amid claims of electoral fraud is entrenching existing divides between the candidates and outgoing President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, as voters wait nervously for a resolution.

The party initially filed its complaint before the National Elections Commission and proceeded to the Supreme Court while those claims were still being investigated by NEC.

Liberia's Supreme Court on Monday ordered the country's electoral commission to resolve a fraud complaint lodged by an opposition party before a scheduled runoff vote for the presidency can be held.

The victor will replace Nobel Prize victor President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female head of state.

Boakai and Weah received the highest votes in the first round of the election.

Vice President Joseph Boakai, left, is due to face former footballer star George Weah in Liberia's presidential runoff vote.

"This is good for Liberia, and this is a manifestation that we have come a long way in our country and that's what we asked for - an opportunity to be heard", said Benjamin Sanvee, chairman of the Liberty Party.

Opposition figure and presidential standard bearer of Liberty Party (LP), Mr Charles Brumskine, filed the application alleging fraud and irregularities in the first round and called for a re-run.

Global donors have poured billions into Liberia since Sirleaf was elected in 2005, and are eager to complete what will be the country's first democratic transition in seven decades, while watching nervously from the sidelines.

A lawyer by training, Brumskine has urged Boakai not to take part in the runoff after the vice-president said he would go ahead regardless of his backing for the legal case.

All ears and eyes of Liberians and foreign observers now in Liberia to observe the ongoing elections are expected focus on tomorrow's ruling by the Supreme Court of Liberia to hear the final verdict from Justice in Chambers on the case filed by Cllr.

"As you can see, the only people who are not complaining are (Weah's) CDC", he added, though the CDC contested election results in 2005 and 2011 once they didn't come out on top.

Her spokesman has said the meeting was in the course of the normal actions of a concerned president.

Boakai's Unity Party signed a letter accusing the president of "interference" by meeting polling officials at her home before the election, and he maintains "there is a reason to raise qualms" if the meeting was indeed at her residence.
