Trump heads into North Korea's line of sight

Trump extending Asia trip to include key summit

The only way to locate and destroy with complete certainty all components of North Korea's nuclear weapons program is through a ground invasion, American military planners said on Saturday.

Pentagon official Rear Admiral Michael J Dumont of the Joint Staff revealed that a ground invasion would be the only way to secure the peninsular, sparking concern from Congressmen from both sides of the aisle. Ted Lieu of California and Ruben Gallego of Arizona.

While announcing the deal last week, Beijing, which views the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense system as a security threat, said it noted that Seoul stated it won't do several things: deploying an additional THAAD battery, helping develop security cooperation with Japan and the US into a trilateral military alliance and joining a global USA missile defense network.

Without "distinguished leadership", North Korea would have "fallen a victim to the invasion by the barbarous USA imperialists".

A United States ground invasion of North Korea could cost "millions" of lives, a new military report has predicted amid growing tensions between the USA and the hermit nation. "It could kill millions of South Koreans and put troops and civilians in Guam and Japan at risk".

US President Donald Trump touched down in Japan Sunday, kicking off the first leg of a high-stakes Asia tour set to be dominated by soaring tensions with nuclear-armed North Korea.

The Pentagon letter to lawmakers also points out that North Korea may consider the use of biological weapons despite its global obligations, and is likely in possession of a chemical weapons stockpile.

"A full discussion of USA capabilities to "counter North Korea's ability to respond with a nuclear weapon and to eliminate North Korea's nuclear weapons located in deeply buried, underground facilities" is best suited for a classified briefing", the daily said.

"This will ultimately bring peace and prosperity to the Korean Peninsula".

'It is our intent to have a full public accounting of the potential cost of war, so the American people understand the commitment we would be making as a nation if we were to pursue military action, ' the lawmakers said.

Trump is also seeking to renegotiate the US-Korea Free Trade Agreement, which experts believe could further strain the alliance at a time when they should be showing unity and resolve.

"Calculating "best- or worst-case casualty scenarios" was challenging and would depend on the "nature, intensity and duration" of a North Korean attack", it quoted the letter as saying.

China's fuel exports to North Korea fell in August, along with iron ore imports from the isolated nation, as trade slowed after the latest UN sanctions, but coal shipments resumed after a five-month hiatus. "We want Putin's help on North Korea, and we'll be meeting with a lot of different leaders".

But aside from provocative statements against North Korea's leadership on his personal Twitter account and threats to unleash "fire and fury" on the rogue state, the administration has not explicitly talked about the possibility of a ground invasion before.

State media in Pyongyang on Monday, referring to Trump, said that "no one can predict when the lunatic old man of the White House, lost to senses, will start a nuclear war" against North Korea.
