Volcano erupts again in Indonesia's Bali

Bali's Mount Agung Erupts For Second Time This Week

Some worldwide flights to and from Bali, Indonesia, were canceled after Bali's Mount Agung volcano started to spew smoke and ash hundreds of meters into the air Saturday, officials said.

KLM, Qantas, AirAsia, and Virgin were among the airlines that canceled flights, which included travel to Australia, the Netherlands and Malaysia.

30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT), spreading ash 1,500 meters to the sky, higher than that at the first eruption on November 21 of 700 meters, spokesman of national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

The Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre said that the volcanic ash cloud was up to 25,000ft and moving south. Villages close to the volcano were coated in a thin layer of ash.

Australian airline Jetstar cancelled nine flights to or from Bali yesterday evening and said it was delaying several flights today to give more time to monitor the situation.

Denpasar's Ngurah Rai International Airport was operating as normal on Saturday night but just two hours following the eruption, several major airlines diverted or cancelled flights to the island.

"There has not been an increase in seismic and volcanic activity after the [Tuesday] eruption and until this afternoon", according to the agency's statement, adding that it had not changed its emergency status for Agung from Level 3, one stage under the highest level. Thousands living in the shadow of Mount Agung have been forced to flee.

A total of 1,100 people were killed in the last eruption of the volcano in 1963.

"Tourism in Bali is still safe, except in the danger (zone) around Mount Agung", it said in a statement, referring to an area that extends to a radius of up to 7.5 km from the summit.

Mass evacuations also took place in September when Mount Agung showed signs of erupting, forcing more than 120,000 from their homes.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire and has 127 active volcanoes - more than any other country.
