Egyptian cleric follows Palestinians in cancelling meeting with Pence

Trump's second-in-command Pence 'unwelcome in Palestine': Fatah official

Amid Jerusalem controversy, Palestinians "will not receive" the U.S. vice president during his scheduled visit this month.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas will refuse to meet US Vice President Mike Pence later this month following Washington's controversial policy shift on Jerusalem, an aide said on Saturday, as protests gripped the Palestinian territories for a third straight day.

"The matter is bigger than a mere meeting because the United States, in its decisions on Jerusalem, crossed red lines", The Jerusalem Post quoted Majdi al-Khalidi, Abbas's diplomatic affairs adviser, as saying to Palestinian Authority radio.

"We will not receive him in the Palestinian territories", Jibril Rajoub said on Thursday, a day after US President Donald Trump formally recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and said he would start the process of moving its embassy there.

Washington addressed the PA warning it of the repercussions of cancelling meetings with Mike Pence, who appeared alongside Trump during his speech from the White House to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Following the announcement by the United States president declaring Jerusalem the Israeli capital, Palestinians unleashed what they have called "day of rage" protests, resulting in two deaths and at least 1,100 injured so far.

White House officials could not immediately be reached for comment and State Department officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A U.S. official, speaking to the Associated Press news agency on condition of anonymity, said that Pence still planned to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, noting it would be "counterproductive" to cancel.

Abbas's Fatah organisation urged Palestinians to "keep up confrontation and broaden it to all points where the Israeli army is present" in the West Bank. Shops were shuttered in Jerusalem's Old City.

In the Gaza Strip, mourners vented their anger at the funerals of two people killed by Israeli troops during clashes at the border fence on Friday and the two Hamas militants killed early on Saturday.

However, Palestinian protests on Saturday were less intense than on the previous two days. Thirteen demonstrators were arrested and four officers were lightly injured by stones, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

Across the Arab and Muslim worlds, thousands more protesters had gathered to express solidarity.

The Turkish presidential source said Erdogan and Macron agreed during a phone call that Trump's move was worrying for the region and that Turkey and France would make a joint effort to try to reverse the US decision.
