Facebook uses AI to tackle catfish and identity thieves

These new additions expand on how Facebook already uses facial recognition, which is primarily through "tag suggestions" - a feature started in 2010 that suggests which of your friends should be tagged in photos that you upload to the site.

People gave us feedback that they would find it easier to manage face recognition through a simple setting, so we're pairing these tools with a single "on/off" control.

In conjunction with the new facial recognition tools, Facebook put out another post in its "Hard Questions" series.

Facial recognition may make the world safer, or more authoritarian, or just weirder - depending on your perspective.

The feature builds on technology Facebook already uses to suggest tags or labels for people in photos users post, Rob Sherman, the company's deputy chief privacy officer, said in an interview.

When you are notified, you then have the choice to add your tag to the photo, leave yourself untagged, or report the photo as inappropriate.

A user must be part of the permitted audience for the page posting the photo in order to receive the notification. More specifically, the poster must set the image's audience to "everyone" for you to be notified. Or, concerned that someone might use your image as their profile photo and catfish people?

Apart from that, Photo Review could also be used to take a trip back in time.

The setting is refreshingly simple within Facebook's app. From there, you basically climb down the social media rabbit hole, looking at older pictures and friends you previously didn't engage with as much.

The new features are being rolled out in the face of growing pressure on the company from regulators who have criticised Facebook for spreading fake news, fostering hate speech, eroding civil discourse and trampling privacy rights.

"We want people to feel confident when they post pictures of themselves on Facebook so we'll soon begin using face recognition technology to let people know when someone else uploads a photo of them as their profile picture".

"We're doing this to prevent people from impersonating others on Facebook", Candela wrote.

Meanwhile, Facebook is also introducing a feature that will tell visually impaired users with screen readers who appear in the photos in their News Feed, even if those people aren't tagged.
