NTSB: Amtrak train crew not using personal electronic devices before derailment

Amtrak engineer in Washington state train crash was not using cellphone

The train was on its inaugural journey from Seattle to Portland, Oregon.

Federal investigators trying to determine the cause of the wreck have gathered data from the locomotive's event data recorder as well as inward- and outward-facing train cameras. The devices captured the crew's actions, their conversations and other information, the NTSB said.

The recording ended with the locomotive tilting and the crew bracing for impact, the statement said.

The engineer did not place the brake handle in emergency-braking mode, the NTSB noted Friday.

But while the engineer appeared to apply brakes, he didn't apply the emergency brakes, investigators said. Initial railroad plans proposed by the Washington state government would have eliminated the turn, allowing trains to safely enter the area at higher speeds, according to the Journal.

"There's more that's not being said than that's being said, to me, as someone who's been involved in investigating accidents before".

"A preliminary report detailing the facts and circumstances of the crash developed in this early stage of the investigation will be available on the NTSB website in the coming days", the agency said.

An initial review of the incident found the train's final recorded speed was 78 miles per hour.

Almost 300 people have died in train crashes that could have been prevented if railroads across the USA implemented critical speed-control technology that federal safety investigators have been pushing for close to five decades, according to rail crash data obtained by The Associated Press.

"The locomotive was in the process of getting a system of PTC installed, but it was not yet functional", NTSB member Bella Dinh-Zarr said.

The board first recommending using "automatic train control" after two Penn Central commuter trains collided in Darien, Connecticut on Aug, 20, 1969, killing four and injuring 43. Railroad companies have until the end of 2018 and a possible extension to 2020 to implement the costly system.

Rail crash data obtained by The Associated Press found that almost 300 people have died in train crashes that could have been prevented if railroads across the USA implemented that critical speed-control technology - something federal safety investigators have been pushing for close to five decades. They suffered physical injuries and potential long-term emotional damage, Krzak said.
