"Silence Breakers" picked as Time magazine's Person of the Year

Time magazine names 'The Silence Breakers' behind #MeToo movement as Person of the Year

The magazine's cover features Ashley Judd, Taylor Swift, Susan Fowler and others who say they have been harassed.

"The galvanizing actions of the women on our cover ... along with those of hundreds of others, and of many men as well, have unleashed one of the highest-velocity shifts in our culture since the 1960s", Felsenthal said.

The image is now a symbol of all the women and men out in the world who are unable to speak up about their experiences with sexual assault because it may negatively impact their lives.

It's been revealed the faceless woman, in the lower right-hand corner of the cover, is an anonymous young hospital worker who was a victim of sexual harassment and was afraid that disclosing her identity would affect her family.

Naturally, people weren't happy that TIME chose an alleged sexual abuser as a runner-up to an entire movement that seeks to end misogyny, rape culture, and the impunity enjoyed by powerful men with regards to sexual assault.

"I think this is a watershed moment indeed, but I think we need to be clear that this is a moment for some people and not for all people", Burke told Kelly.

Ironically enough, the announcement was made Wednesday on NBC's "Today" show, which just fired former host Matt Lauer for his own sexual misconduct.

After the Times' exposé, dozens of women came forward sharing similar stories, and often worse, about Weinstein's behavior. Trump also said that he turned the magazine down.

The magazine became embroiled in a Twitter row with Mr Trump over this year's award after he claimed he "took a pass" because the publication asked for the opportunity to meet him without confirming he would retain the title. "We're done. No more,"' Milano said.

Activist Tarana Burke founded the "Me Too" movement in 2006, but it went viral when actress Alyssa Milano shared the hashtag in a tweet. "It's vital to me that we really set in some actionable things that we can do to continue this momentum".

The shortlist also included National Football League player Colin Kaepernick, Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins.

The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, Time's 2015 Person of the Year, said through a spokesman that this year's winners should be thanked for "having the courage to break the silence on sexual assaults and for the worldwide discussion that they have launched".
