Majority of US Nationwide Park Service board resigns

Ryan Zinke Secretary of the Interior

Ten of 12 members of the National Park System Advisory Board, created by Congress in 1935 to consult the department on parks management, quit this week, citing Zinke's refusal to meet with them since he rode in on horseback. In the January 15 letter Knowles said that he will remain dedicated to the success of America's national parks, but "For the previous year we have stood by waiting for the chance to meet and continue the partnership between the NPSAB and the DOI [Department of the Interior] as prescribed by law".

"For the previous year we have stood by waiting for the chance to meet and continue the partnership between the NPSAB and the DOI as prescribed by law", wrote board member Carrie Hessler Radelet, president of Project Concern International and former director of the Peace Corps. The publication said it also shows how federal advisory bodies have been marginalized in Trump's administration.

Nine of the panel's 12 members, including Dr. Margaret Wheatley, of Provo, signed off on a letter of resignation on Monday.

"We worry greatly that the new initiatives incorporated in the [National Park System] are now being rescinded", Long told the Post.

"It is patently false to say the Department had not engaged the board when as recently as January 8, we were working with the board to renew their charter, schedule a meeting, and fill vacancies", it said. "For the previous year we have stood by waiting for the chance to meet and continue the partnership between the NPSAB and the DOI as prescribed by law", Knowles said.

As for what comes next for the board, Burke said she hopes new members will share the same ethic and devotion to the national parks as she and those who resigned.

Its mission is to advise the director of the National Park Service and the Interior Secretary on "matters relating to the National Park Service, the National Park System, and programs administered by the National Park Service, including the administration of the Historic Sites, Buildings, and Antiquities Act; the designation of national historic landmarks and national natural landmarks; and the national historic significance of proposed national historic trails".

Secretary Zinke, formerly a USA representative serving Montana, has come under scrutiny for promoting the president's agenda over protection the nation's public lands.

"Since our chairman's request to meet was ignored, I believed our interests were not shared by the DOI, so I joined with other members in resigning", Chen said.

"I will continue the ground game with the unsung heroes in all of this, the National Park Service staff who daily do the best they can to serve the public and our precious national and historical resources to the best of their ability in the face of adverse policies coming from the administration", she said. The Interior Department also has promoted extraction of resources and development over resource protection and has recommended a dramatic reduction in the size of two national monuments, so that extractive and commercial uses can be accommodated.
