Myanmar Military Forced 10 Rohingya to Dig Own Graves, Then Executed Them

The graveyard where the bodies were found

10 #Rohingya villagers killed by #Myanmar military & #Rakhine villagers were arrested from this place on August 31, 2017. The executed Rohingya were reportedly forced to dig their own grave at gunpoint by both government forces and Burmese villagers.

Amnesty International has reiterated a call for an independent investigation into rights abuses in Myanmar's Rakhine state after the country's army admitted its soldiers were involved in the murder of 10 Rohingya.

Fortify Rights, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch have described the admission that ethnic Rakhine villagers and security forces killed 10 Royingya Muslims in Inn Dinn village on September 2 previous year as the "tip of the iceberg", and want an international investigation. They claim the killed Rohingyas were captured by security forces after they clashed with the military.

"Action will be taken against the villagers who participated in the case and the members of security forces who broke the rules of engagement under the law", the statement said.

The military, in its account of the killings, said "200 Bengali terrorists" armed with sticks and swords attacked soldiers in the area on September 1.

The head of Myanmar's government and Nobel Peace Prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi has failed to recognize the crimes committed against the Rohingya people, denying charges of "ethnic cleansing".

The captives should have been handed over to the police, in line with procedure, but the militants were attacking "continuously" and had destroyed two military vehicles with explosives, it said.

Myanmar's military hasn't made a public admission of guilt until now.

Angry ethnic Rakhine Buddhist villagers, who had lost relatives in militant attacks, wanted to kill the captives, and stabbed them after forcing them into a grave on the outskirts of the village.

"However, it is only the tip of the iceberg and warrants serious independent investigation into what other atrocities were committed", he said in a statement.

More than 650,000 Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh to escape a brutal crackdown in which security forces have been accused of systematic abuses tantamount to ethnic cleansing.

Until Wednesday, Myanmar army has vigorously denied any abuses, instead locking down access to Rakhine state and accusing critics - including the United Nations - of pro-Rohingya bias and spreading "fake news".

Myanmar insists that the Rohingya minority are illegal migrants from Bangladesh, hence the references to "Bengalis" in official statements.

The rights group Amnesty International said the statement from the military was "a sharp departure from the army's policy of blanket denial of any wrongdoing".
