Saudi King Orders SR1,000 Payment to State Employees in 2018

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman

Saudi Arabian authorities have detained 11 princes after they gathered at a royal palace in Riyadh in a rare protest against the government suspending payment of their utility bills, the public prosecutor said on Saturday.

The Sabq website, quoting unnamed officials, reported that a division of the Saudi National Guard, which is tasked with protecting the royal family, was ordered to arrest the princes. Their request was to abolish the royal decree, which provides for the abolition of the routine payment of electricity and water bills to royal family members by the state. "Despite being informed that their demands are not lawful, the 11 princes refused to leave the area, disrupting public peace and order". In cooperation with other security sectors, the Royal Guard provides security and protection to the king, crown prince and VIPs inside and outside the country.

The Saudi anti-corruption committee, formed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, took further measures against the detained princes and ministers, including travel-bans and bank accounts freezes.

Saudi Arabia a year ago rounded up dozens of royal family members, current and former senior officials in the crackdown on corruption that has also strengthened the power of the heir to the Saudi throne, Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Past year dozens of princes, as well as sitting ministers and ex-ministers, were arrested as part of an anti-corruption drive.

On Jan. 1, Saudi Arabia also hiked gasoline and fuel prices and imposed a five percent value-added tax on most goods and services, ending its decades-long tax-free policy.

The nature of the missions assigned to al-Ajrab Sword Brigade is unclear, but activists say its members specialise in sensitive and royal-related cases.

Saudi King Salman on January 6 ordered extra pay for government workers and soldiers this year.
