U.S. stocks open higher after earnings reports

USA stock indexes started higher on Friday as the Dow and the S&P 500 were on track to set record high closes. Shares of 3M rose 0.6 per cent in the morning session.

Another set of data showed new orders for key USA -made capital goods unexpectedly fell in December.

"The Q4 print showed that domestic demand is strong - really strong - and perhaps beginning to push against the capacity constraints of the economy", market economists at BNP Paribas wrote in a note.

Oil prices settled higher on Friday after hitting three-year highs, with crude also posting a weekly gain as a weaker USA dollar underpinned prices.

The dollar was on track for its worst week since May after comments from senior USA officials this week backing a weak currency.

The U.S. dollar remained weak against a basket of major currencies, still bruised by comments earlier this week by a senior U. The greenback clawed back some of the losses after President Donald Trump said he ultimately wants the dollar to be strong.




Enbridge Inc. lost 1.1 per cent to $47.05, while TransCanada Corp. fell 0.8 per cent to $57.24.

At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 26,609.99, up 0.8 percent for its third straight record. The S&P 500 increased 1.71 points, or 0.06 percent, to 2,839.25.

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index rose 0.54 percent and MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe gained 0.29 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 28.95 points, or 1 percent.

Pfizer PFE.N rose 3.6 percent after European regulator recommended granting marketing approval to a diabetes drug developed by the company and Merck MRK.N .

Shares of Intel Corp (INTC.O) jumped more than 10 percent and hit their highest level since October 2000 a day after the company reported quarterly results.

US stocks spent a second day flipping between small gains and losses Thursday as investors again looked for hints about the Trump administration's stance on worldwide trade and the dollar.
