Another Government Shutdown - But This One May Be Short

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell R-Kentucky and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer D New York left walk to the chamber after collaborating on an agreement in the Senate on a two-year almost $400 billion budget deal that would provide Pentago

U.S. politicians have passed a bipartisan budget agreement, ending the second government shutdown in as many months.

Late on Thursday, as Senator Paul continued to delay the vote, the White House said it was preparing for a possible shutdown.

House conservatives balked at the measure for increasing the deficit in conjunction to increasing the debt limit, arguing it's fiscally irresponsible.

The President played little role in attempts by party leaders earlier this week to head the shutdown off and end months of fiscal squabbling.

On Friday Paul slammed the new government spending bill, saying it fails to address the deficit and raises the debt ceiling at the same time.

His dissent forced the brief government shutdown, underscoring the persistent inability of Congress and Trump to deal efficiently with Washington's fiscal obligation to keep the government open. The party that railed against increasing USA debt and deficit levels during the Obama era is now shepherding through billions of dollars in extra spending, on top of the $1.5 trillion tax cut plan passed in December.

Almost $300 billion in new spending that is included in the bill approved on Friday will mean the annual budget deficit will exceed $1 trillion in 2019, said the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a private fiscal policy watchdog group in Washington. "I can't.in good faith, just look the other way because my party is now complicit in the deficits".

Beyond $300 billion worth of increases for the military and domestic programs, the agreement adds $89 billion in overdue disaster aid for hurricane-slammed Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, a politically charged increase in the government's borrowing cap and a grab bag of health and tax provisions. A sweeping bipartisan vote is expected on the measure, which is attached to a huge budget agreement, but the timing and outcome of a House vote are less certain.

People in both chambers prattled on to TV news political pundits about support for the far-reaching budget deal Paul was holding hostage on the Senate floor. We would cut back on military spending if other countries we are in debt to wanted the money back sooner.

Different groups are working to prepare legislation for the immigration effort, including conservatives who are working on a legislative version of President Donald Trump's proposed framework and a group of bipartisan senators who have been meeting almost daily to try to reach agreement on the issue. Really who is to blame?

The Senate passed the legislation, which funds the government through March 23, in a 71-28 vote shortly before 2 a.m after Republican Sen.

"[Pelosi] is always very persuasive but she wasn't trying to persuade", said Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond.

The California congresswoman has called for the bill to include a provision shielding so-called Dreamers, young immigrants who entered the United States illegally as children, from deportation. In January, after a three-day closure, Senate Democrats secured from GOP leaders the promise of a debate and vote on a deal to protect the younger immigrants from deportation.

"We're not going to get DACA as part of this", said Rep. John Yarmuth of Kentucky, the top Democrat on the Budget Committee.

Paul said the decision is a slap in the face to Republicans, who since the Obama administration, have adamantly insisted that all spending legislation's be funded by budget offsets.
