Asma Jahangir passes away in Lahore

Asma Jahangir

Her daughters were kidnapped and assaulted in 2008. "Her spirit will live as long as that voice in our head keeps telling us what is not right, what must not be tolerated, why not to give in or give up". Pakistan has lost its most fearless crusader and the human rights movement its tallest leader. If the answer was in the affirmative, she urged the Pakistan government to explain why. She was arrested and jailed in 1983. She won scores of global awards.

"I don't care at all". She was one of the few Pakistani who spoke against the state atrocities against the Baloch people and fought for their rights. She remained house arrest in 2007 for nine days.

In 2013, leaked U.S. intelligence documents had revealed that they were aware of a plot by parts of Pakistan's security apparatus to kill Jahangir.

Journalist Naila Inayat, termed her death "the end to an era" while Mehreen Zahra-Malik, another journalist, tweeted: "A male friend once asked: why is Asma Jahangir always so angry?"

Nobel prize victor Malala Yousafzai remarked: "Heartbroken that we lost Asma Jahangir - a saviour of democracy and human rights".

Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif spoke about Asma's work for women and stance against dictators, saying it would be hard to fill the void left by her death. "May her soul rest in peace!", Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said in a tweet.

"Democracy, human rights and resistance against oppression lost a great soldier- Asma Jehangir".

In a condolence message, Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain expressed grief over Jahangir's death, saying she rendered unprecedented services for the rule of law.

She received a Bachelors' degree from Kinnaird and and an LLB from Punjab University. She later went on to become the first woman to serve as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, writes the Dawn.

In the early '80s, she was imprisoned for partaking in the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy during the military regime of Zia ul Haq.

Nobel Peace Prize victor Malala Yousafzai described her as a "savior of democracy and human rights".

In Pakistan, she was awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz and the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, the second and third highest civilian honours.

Asma Jahangir won many national as well as worldwide awards including Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders in 1995, Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 2010, and various others. She had served as United Nations special rapporteur on freedom of religion and human rights.
