British IS killers should spend life in prison, says victim's mother

British IS militant caught as he tried to flee Syria for Turkey

A Frenchmen who survived detention by Islamic State fighters says he wants justice, not revenge, now that two members of the notorious insurgent cell dubbed "The Beatles" have been captured. The four young men from west London, who were given their nickname by the hostages because of their British accents, were linked to a string of murders in Iraq and Syria.

According to U.S. officials, Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh were detained last month.

Kotey and Elsheikh were captured in early January by the Syrian Democratic Forces during an operation in eastern Syria, according to a USA official. The Americans confirmed their identities using fingerprints and other biometric measurements.

Emwazi, who featured in ISIS execution videos dressed in black and wielding a knife, was killed in a drone strike on Raqqa, formerly ISIS's self-declared capital, in 2015.

Turkish authorities have also detained hundreds of people across Turkey suspected of being Islamic State members since IS fighters were defeated in the Syrian city of Raqqa in October by the SDF.

Bethany Haines, whose father David, a British aid worker, was one of at least 27 hostages beheaded by the cell, said that she wanted the men to "die a long, slow, painful death" but accepted they should instead be put on trial.

He was jailed for seven-and-a-half years in Turkey last year after being found guilty of being a member of a terrorist organisation.

Since their capture, both Kotey and Elsheikh have provided important information to military interrogators, the Times reported, citing a "senior United States official".

Kotey, who is half Ghanaian, half Greek Cypriot, grew up in a family of dress cutters in Shepherd's Bush - just under two miles away from Emwazi - and was an avid supporter of Queens Park Rangers Football Club.

The State Department, in imposing sanctions on Kotey past year, said he likely engaged in executions and torture, including electronic shock and waterboarding, and recruited several British nationals to IS.

The pair's capture was first reported by The New York Times. He took the name Hamza and it is believed he went to Syria in 2012, leaving behind four children born to two different women.

The families have long hoped to recover the bodies of their loved ones, but ISIS' control of chunks of Syria rendered the task almost impossible.

It has always been believed the hostages he beheaded in a series of violent videos were killed outside Raqqa, the IS stronghold in Syria.

The SDF, which is spearheaded by the Kurdish YPG militia, has consistently accused Turkey of supporting IS militants in northern Syria, where the USA -led coalition has helped the SDF to drive the jihadists from swathes of territory.
