Can eating slow help you lose weight?

Slow Eating May Reduce Obesity Risk, Study Says

Those who eat slower tend to lose weight faster, according to a Japanese study published on February 12, 2018 in the journal "BMJ Open". The results suggested that the slow-eaters tended to be healthier and to have a healthier lifestyle than either the fast or normal speed eaters.

Researchers analysed health insurance data from 60,000 people with diabetes in Japan who had regular health check-ups between 2008 and 2013. A possible reason? Fast eaters may continue to eat even after they are full, even when their bodies have an adequate amount of calories, since the brain takes a little time to interpret chemical signals from the stomach that say "enough".

After taking into account other potential factors, the researchers found that those who said they ate at normal speed were 29 percent less likely to be obese than those who said they were fast eaters.

It is not the first time a study finds an association between eating speed and numerous health benefits.

The team also found people who ate their evening meal at least two hours before they went to bed three times a week were 10 per cent less likely to be overweight, which they defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of more than 25. People who eat faster, skip breakfast, and eat midnight snacks have higher obesity risk.

The study concludes that "changes in eating habits can affect obesity, BMI and waist circumference". Changes in eating habits were strongly associated with lower obesity and weight, and smaller weight circumference.

The team also noticed the adjustment in the eating speed over the timeframe of six years.

So, the conclusion of the study is that we need to keep in mind to eat slower and not to eat just before bedtime.

That's the outcome of a study in the journal BMJ Open, which scrutinised the health insurance data of almost 60,000 Japanese people who were quizzed about their health and lifestyle habits over a six-year period. A new study finds that three simple eating habits could make all the difference when it comes to fitting into those older, tighter trousers collecting dust in your closet.

As per study results if the food is eaten slowly by pausing between bites and chewing slowly could lead to weight loss. In the case of the fast eater, the signal may only arrive in the brain after the person has already consumed too much food.

Eating quickly has previously been linked to impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance.

Tam Fry, chair of the National Obesity Forum, said: "The speed at which a lot of people wolf down their food is undeniably a contributor to obesity". In another study, people were asked to eat ice cream slower, which caused more of their gut hormones to be secreted, which made more people report that they were feeling fuller.

'They should stop what they're doing, switch off their phones and emails and preferably take a half hour away from the office altogether'.
