Fears that sea levels will be rising 1cm a year by 2100

NASA reports New Study shows Global Sea Level Rise has Accelerated over past 25 years

The past annual rate of sea level rise - about three millimetres (0.1 inches) per year - may more than triple to 10mm per year by 2100, said the report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), a peer-reviewed U.S. journal.

By Jason Samenow, The Washington Post •.

The study states that on average, global oceans rose 7 centimeters since 1993.

Glacier de France emptying into the Denmark Strait, Greenland, is seen in a photo taken during NASA's Operation IceBridge Helheim-Kangerdlugssuap Gap B mission May 17, 2016. The rising seas have slowly and steadily eaten away at the coast.

Right now the oceans rise by around 3 millimetres each year, but that number is going up by 0.8 mm every 12 months, the data shows. The acceleration rate uncovered in this study would more than double sea level rise by 2100 in comparison to steady sea level rise without acceleration. According to Anny Cazavene, director of Earth Science at International Space Science Institute in France, the sea level rise can a better gauge of climate change in action as compared to rising temperature.

The study, by USA scientists, has calculated the rate of global mean sea level rise is not just going up at a steady rate of 3mm a year, but has been increasing by an additional 0.08mm a year, every year since 1993. Sea level rise isn't a auto steadily cruising on the highway.

But it was only a matter of time before an accelerating trend would become clear, scientists thought.

Monday's study now suggests enough data is now available to confirm that sea level rise is in fact speeding up.

If the rate of change continues at this pace, global mean sea levels will rise 61 centimetres between now and 2100, they report today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

But, Majkut, who was not involved in the study cautioned: "It's only one paper, so we'll see if it holds up".

Scientists say global warming will be the primary cause of future sea-level rise.

Assuming the acceleration rate that this study found stays consistent throughout the century, sea levels will rise 26 inches by 2100, the authors concluded.

These projections could even be too low. A second part of the study used satellite data tracking tiny fluctuations in gravity due toice mass loss to trace the acceleration back to melting ice in Greenland and Antarctica.

But that figure, which is broadly in line with climate modelling, is likely to be a conservative estimate of global mean sea level rise in the future, said Professor Nerem.

The rather steady sea level rise observed to date, just starting to accelerate, has already proven disruptive in many USA coastal areas. In other words, areas that used to flood only during major storms are now seeing inundation of roads and businesses during much lesser tidal events; sometimes even on sunny days.

Bangladesh and the Maldives are among the regions of the world most threatened by rising seas. During the January "bomb cyclone", Boston observed its highest tide in recorded history.
