Jaguars close to signing QB Bortles to extension

Super Bowl hopeful locks up franchise QB ahead of uncertain offseason

The biggest pending story-line of the offseason for the Jacksonville Jaguars has been resolved on Saturday night. Yes, they have former first-round pick Blake Bortles, but they also have former first-round pick Blake Bortles.

A day after faith was placed in the front office and head coach with contract extensions, Jacksonville is also placing belief in Bortles after a trip to the AFC championship game previous year.

"We've always trusted Blake and we're excited that he'll lead our offense for years to come", Jaguars center Brandon Linder said.

The Jacksonville Jaguars stunned a lot of people when the news broke that they extended the contract of quarterback Blake Bortles. The move has Bortles under contract in Jacksonville through the 2020 season.

Rarely does a player get to play his high school, collegiate and professional career in their home state as Bortles has, but he's clearly thankful for the opportunity.

"By the end of [the season], it was kind of, they didn't want to do really any more cortisone shots, so it was a 'Let's make it through the season and get it fixed and get it right after the year, '" Bortles said. Bortles' contract ranks 17th among quarterbacks in terms of per year average at $18 million and will only fall further when Kirk Cousins and AJ McCarron get new deals in free agency. "Either way, however this went, I don't think it would have had a ton of effect on how I feel". Which would have paid him so much that it would have made no sense to also draft a potential franchise quarterback? He threw for 594 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions during the postseason. It's a dream come true to be able to sign a second contract by the team that drafted me. But rather than reel in a truckload of money, the young quarterback is going to be a roaring bargain for his team, which now has more cap flexibility going forward as a result. Entering the 2017 season, Bortles had as many victories (11) as interceptions returned for touchdowns.
