Samsung starts mass production of its 30TB SAS SSD

Samsung announced the production of the PM1643 a 30.72TB SSD. Samsung Electronics

Samsung has revealed the world's largest 2.5-inch SSD, managing to cram an astonishing 30.72TB of storage into the diminutive form factor. The new SSD is specifically created to meet the demands of next-generation enterprise storage systems with technologies such as 64-layer V-NAND and 3-bit 512-gigabit chips.

Samsung began manufacturing initial batches of these SSDs back in January and mass production has now kicked off. Now this year, Samsung is taking it a step further with the new "PM1643", a 30TB SSD built on the latest 512Gb V-NAND.

The end result is a drive with twice the capacity of Samsung's previous largest enterprise SSD, while offering a 12Gb/s SAS interface and achieving 2,100MB/s read speeds and 1,700MB/s writes. Sequential read and write speeds of up to 2100 MBPS and 1700 MBPS respectively were recorded in tests done by Samsung. Samsung touts that this is four-times the read speed and three-times the write speed of a typical 2.5-inch SATA SSD.

According to Jaesoo Han, executive vice president of the Memory Sales & Marketing Team at Samsung, "With our launch of the 30.72TB SSD, we are once again shattering the enterprise storage capacity barrier, and in the process, opening up new horizons for ultra-high capacity storage systems worldwide".

The drive also comes with a new controller that integrates nine main and sub controllers used in previous SSDs. Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology is used to interconnect 8 Gb DDR4 chips into ten TSV DRAM packages each totaling 4 GB.

An enhanced software compliments the SSDs hardware and provides features such as metadata protection, data retention and recovery in case of sudden power losses, Samsung informed. Drive endurance is rated at one full drive write per day (DWPD), which translates into writing 30.72TB of data every day over the five-year warranty period without failure.

That's 40,000/50,000 R/W IOPS by the way and a mean time between failures of two million hours. The prime target for these versions includes various market segments such as the government, financial services, healthcare, education, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, social media, business services, retail, and communications sectors.
