Second Russian athlete tests positive for performance-enhancing drug at Olympics

Angela Ruggiero with IOC President Thomas Bach

Nadezhda Sergeeva, a member of the Russian women's bobsled team who tested positive for banned heart medication, is seen wearing a sweatshirt that says "I Don't Do Doping I am Za Sport" in an ad for Zasport earlier this month.

She has been identified as Nadezhda Sergeeva, finished 12th in the two-woman bob where she had been the pilot with partner Anastasia Kocherzhova. Nadezhda Sergeeva - who has ironically been wearing a shirt reading "I don't do doping" - has become the latest distraction for Russian Federation after the country's flag was banned from the Olympics for cheating.

The 25-year-old was one of 168 Russian athletes who passed rigorous testing to compete as neutrals in Pyeongchang, after Russia were banned over a major doping scandal.

Per Reevell, a Russian Bobsled Federation statement read, "The Federation and the athlete herself understand the measure of our responsibility and how what has happened can affect the fates of all the teams".

However, the IOC's position on the matter could change in light of the two positive OAR doping tests. But the World Curling Federation said separately that they would now receive their bronze medals "in due course".

The news comes one day before International Olympic Committee's executive board will make a final determination as to whether the country will be reinstated for the closing ceremony of the Games on Sunday.

The victory at the Winter Olympics in South Korea sends the team of Russian athletes into the final to compete for gold on February 25 against the victor of the February 24 semifinal match between Canada or Germany. Any athlete that tested negative for banned substances before the start of the games was allowed to compete, but as the athletes are tested throughout the Olympics, it seems that some of the competitors chose to throw caution to the wind.

The positive test comes at the worst possible time for Russian Federation.

Stanislav Pozdnyakov, head of the OAR delegation here in Pyeongchang, has criticised the athlete for "negligence". "She has let us down".

"It has to end some time", she told the Associated Press.

Russian state TV reports that curler Alexander Krushelnitsky will give back his Olympic bronze medal after failing a drug test at the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

There are, on the face of it at least, similarities between the cases involving Krushelnitsky and Sergeeva.
