Brexit Bulletin: One year to go

One year left before Brexit

The tumultuous Brexit process, triggered by the June 2016 referendum on EU membership, was legally initiated on March 29 last year, when United Kingdom officials gave notice to the European Commission that it was triggering Article 50 of the EU Treaty - under which a member state gives two years' notice of its intention to leave.

The people of Britain, the world's sixth-largest economy, caused a major global shock in 2016 by voting narrowly to quit the European Union after a fevered referendum campaign that sharpened regional divisions, pitted young against old and exposed a deep distrust between voters and the political establishment.

Meanwhile, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, a major anti-Brexit voice, said it was "more likely. than a few months ago" that Brexit could be stopped, saying it was "not too late".

The prime minister was speaking on a rapid tour encompassing England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Instead of determining an annual budget each year, she said, a multi-year funding arrangement will be agreed so health chiefs have more certainty and stability from year to year.

Kicking off in Scotland, the Prime Minister will visit textile workers at a factory in Ayrshire, before travelling to Newcastle to meet with a local parent and toddler group.

"But we want to ensure that in simple things like selling food across the whole of the United Kingdom, that there aren't any barriers put up to doing that as freely it can happen today".

"It's very roundabout and complicated but essentially yes there is a dividend from leaving the European Union".

This would mean the first working day in Britain outside of the European Union would be April Fools Day.

May, 61, has 12 months to plot a successful course through hard political and economic terrain.

According to a poll published on Wednesday, 44 percent of Britons think that "the government's handling of the Brexit negotiations so far has been "a total shambles", with 18 percent who it has been "satisfactory" and three percent "excellent". To fail to provide them with the education and support they need will short-change the nation in the long term.

But first, the PM must agree a deal in Parliament, with a vote expected in October.

"Having regained control of our laws, our borders and our money, and seized the opportunities provided by Brexit, the UK will thrive as a strong and united country that works for everyone, no matter whether you voted Leave or Remain".

Scotland and Wales are drawing up contingency plans to protect their own interests in case they can not reach agreement with May on how powers regained from Brussels are redistributed.
