PM Narendra Modi: Fight against terrorism not against any religion

His Majesty King Abdullah addresses the Jordanian Indian Business Forum meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday

India-Jordan ties that will be discussed by PM Modi and King of Jordan, Abdullah II Bin Al-Hussein, include a variety of subjects like agreements on culture, customs and health, strategic India-Jordan defence partnership, a twin agreement between the archeological heritage sites in India (Agra) and Jordan (Petra) and the establishing of a centre by C-DAC, in Amman. He stressed that Indian democracy is celebrations of our age-old plurality.

Later in the day, India and Jordan signed 12 agreements including a framework pact on defence cooperation that defines the "scope of such cooperation and making provisions for implementation of the cooperation in some of the recognized areas like training; defence industry; counter-terrorism; military studies; cybersecurity; military medical services, peace-keeping, etc.", a statement from the Indian foreign ministry said. Every Indian is proud of this virtue, no matter what language he speaks, no matter what religion he practises", the prime minister said at the conference on 'Islamic Heritage: "Promoting Understanding and Moderation'. After that, we shall be holding talks aimed at boosting India-Jordan relations, " he tweeted this morning.

King Abdullah II, who released the Urdu translation of "A Thinking Person's Guide to Islam" by Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, echoed Modi's message that war on terror needs to seen as fight between moderates and hatred than any religious war.

The conference was attended by eminent Muslim intellectuals and envoys of some Islamic countries, including Pakistan High Commissioner Sohail Mahmood.

Also, in December past year, India voted with the rest of the world in the UN General Assembly against US President Donald Trump's unilateral announcement recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Both sides are looking at closer security cooperation given that Jordan sits at the crossroads of a very volatile region neighbouring Israel, Palestine, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Prime Minister Modi also shared similar sentiment and said fight against radicalism and terror is actually directed against the distorted "mindset" and not against any religion.

The Kings is now visiting India. Hindutva leaders deliver hate speeches without any fear of law, while vigilante groups feel so emboldened that they themselves record videos of lynching they commit in the name of "gau-raksha" and "love-jihad", and spew venom against one particular community before they share it on the social media.

Late on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was returning from Karnataka, stayed on at the airport to receive King Abdullah of Jordan with his singature bear hug. "We take pride here in our incredible diversity", said the PM. "It is against that mentality that misleads our youth and prepares them to persecute innocents". "India would like to walk together with you in the work done by you in the area of de-radicalisation", he said.
