Sacked Google employee files lawsuit against company citing bias

According to a lawsuit filed by former Google engineer Loretta Lee the tech giant’s ‘bro-culture’ lead to routine sexual harassment and lewd comments at work

This latest lawsuit comes from one of Google's former recruiters, after he claimed he was sacked for ignoring company orders to reject white and Asian male job applicants.

Wilberg, who spent nine years at Google before he was sacked last November, worked as a YouTube recruiter for four years. Which one is it?

Wilberg claimed that YouTube circulated an internal document telling recruiters to hire only diverse candidates for three months during 2017. He alleges that YouTube attempted to hide their blatant hiring bias and that he was told in a meeting in January 2016 that the company had to "clean up" its diversity hiring practices. Wilberg says he complained about the practices and was ultimately fired in November.

A few months back, James Damore, a former Google employee, claimed that he was sacked for writing an anti-diversity memo, which triggered loads of controversy both within and outside the organization.

According to the suit, in March 2017, an internal e-mail from a manager instructed recruiters to only accept candidates from "historically underrepresented groups".

A Google spokeswoman said the company will vigorously defend itself against the lawsuit.

The civil complaint explains how, in his job, Wilberg was tasked with helping to select engineering and tech talent for YouTube and Google.

The National Labor Relations Board's general counsel would later rule that Google had not violated the law when it fired him, causing Damore to withdraw the complaint he filed with the agency. He also claimed in the lawsuit that he was sacked because of his complaints that he was being discriminated against for being a White male.

It is the latest diversity row to hit Google, coming in the same week as a separate lawsuit claiming that a toxic "bro culture" discriminated against women. In the lawsuit, Loretta Lee, a former software engineer, noted that she faced lewd comments, pranks, and even physical violence from colleagues. He was also told to cancel interviews of men who were white or Asian. Earlier this year, a lawsuit alleged that the company has failed to do enough for female workers and racial minorities.

"It is a cruel irony that Google attempted to justify firing me by claiming that my social networking posts showed bias against my harassers", Chevalier told The Verge. Damore was subsequently fired by Google. And, this has put the search giant amid the nation's culture wars.
