Trump administration sues California over immigration, sanctuary state policies

The suit was filed in the Sacramento federal court Tuesday and names Gov. Jerry Brown and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra as defendants

Like heads of other sanctuary city jurisdictions, the California leaders being sued by the Justice Department believe the federal government can't compel state and local police to enforce federal law, and that openness over immigration status encourages the undocumented to work with police and report other crimes, creating a safer environment.

He says his department is simply asking California to allow ICE agents to do their job.

"Here's my message to Mayor Schaaf-how dare you".

Sessions criticized Mayor Libby Schaaf in a speech Wednesday to law enforcement officials after he sued California over laws that restrict cooperation with USA immigration authorities.

Several other states including Colorado, Illinois, New Mexico, Oregon and Vermont have "sanctuary laws", according to the Center for Immigration Studies.

Brown and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra are directly named in the suit - and are ready for the fight.

The action prompted quick and harsh protests from local officials, including the president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, who then boycotted a scheduled meeting at the White House.

The suit heightens tensions between California and the Trump administration, and sets up a judicial showdown over the scope and degree of state cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Meanwhile, California officials are prepared to fight back and hold their stance against Trump's decidedly anti-immigrant policies. "Federal law is 'the supreme law of the land.' I would invite any doubters to Gettysburg, and to the graves of John C. Calhoun and Abraham Lincoln", Sessions said.

Wouldn't it be nice if Jeff Sessions wanted to invoke "federal law precedence", over all the states' failing gun controls in order to halt the unrestricted sale of automatic weapons to just about anybody who wants them?

On Wednesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions appeared in Sacramento, where he announced the lawsuit while expressing outrage in what can only be characterized as a lecture. Brown told the AG that "political stunts" like those work in Washington, not California.

"This is really unprecedented,"said Brown after Sessions' speech, "for the chief law enforcement officer of the United States to come out to California and act more like Fox News". My fear is that crime is going to increase because many immigrant families will be fearful of calling their local police departments", said de Leon". "Bragging about and encouraging the obstruction of our law enforcement and I am afraid that this is an embarrassment to the proud state of California".

California Gov. Jerry Brown defended the state's sanctuary laws. California, however, has sued the Trump administration to release one barred grant, seeking a judge to certify that its laws are in compliance with federal laws. It also served as a warning to Democratic lawmakers and elected officials nationwide who have enacted sanctuary policies that provide protections for undocumented immigrants.

District Attorney George Gascón also called the timing of the lawsuit and recent raids "suspicious", considering the low presidential approval ratings as midterm elections ramp up.

Larger US cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago and NY ruled by the opposition Democrats, adopted policies that hinder the sharing of information between the local police and immigration officers.
