Candlelight Vigil Planned To Honor Slain Yarmouth Police Officer

The officer shot and killed Thursday in Barnstable was a New Bedford native. He called Gannon a "remarkable young man".

Even as an undergraduate Sean Gannon knew he wanted to be a K-9 officer with a police department.

"We are also praying tonight for the recovery of Officer Gannon's K9 partner, who was also injured in today's tragic incident", state police said in a statement.

The suspect, who has a criminal history, is now in custody, but a shootout with police ensued around 5:45 p.m. after the suspect fatally shot Gannon, CBS 5 reported.

Thomas Latanowich, 29, hung his head throughout his brief arraignment in Barnstable District Court, speaking only to answer "yes" when the judge asked if he understood the proceedings.

Robert Iacoviello (YAC'-oh-vee-ELL'-oh) agreed to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter instead facing a second murder trial.

O'Keefe said the last prison time Latanowich served was a four- to five-year sentence on gun charges.

"He is stable but not out of the woods", the Dennis Veterinary Hospital told WCVB.

Gannon was taken to Cape Cod Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Flags are also flying at half-staff in his honor. "But we still have a job to do and we will do it".
