Palestinian journalist shot and killed in Gaza

Palestinians bury their dead after Israel kills nine in border protests

"I am 30, live in Gaza and [have] never travelled". Friday's protest, however, was smaller in scale than that of last week, which was estimated to bring together about 30,000 Palestinians.

During the protests, Palestinians built a tent encampment with different tents corresponding to the various villages and towns that were destroyed during the Nakba 70 years ago.

The rally, known as the "Great March of Return", is considered Gaza's largest mass protest in the history of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as tens of thousands of Palestinians gather near the Gaza-Israel border on a daily basis. Almost 500 were injured by live fire, the Gaza health ministry stated.

Among the nine Arabs who were killed in the ensuing violence was an alleged Palestinian Authority journalist, Yasser Murtaja, who was reportedly hit while filming in an area completely masked by the thick black smoke.

The Israel Defense Forces denied reports that the suspects had shot at Israeli equipment or troops.

Also in Australia, almost 1,000 demonstrators joined a protest rally in Melbourn dubbed "Free Palestine" to censure Israeli regime's brutal violence - including live fire - used against Palestinian protesters in occupied territories in recent days.

"The circumstances of the breach are being investigated", the army said.

The Palestinian, armed with a screwdriver, was shot by a civilian who was at the scene.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights stated its "grave concern" for further violence ahead of Friday's demonstrations.

The Labour leader said the Palestinians "have a right to protest against their appalling conditions and the continuing blockade and occupation of Palestinian land, and in support of their right to return to their homes and their right to self-determination". Palestinians seek east Jerusalem as their future capital and view Trump's decision as siding with Israel.

The event was attended by many young British Palestinians. Over 1,000 were reported injured.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said Friday that Israel's firing on the Gazans "raises serious questions about the proportionate use of force which must be addressed".

Tension has grown across the Palestinian territories since December 6 when U.S. President Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Many Palestinians suffered tear gas inhalation.

Israel's defence minister has warned that protesters approaching the border fence endanger their lives, drawing condemnation from rights groups that said such seemingly broad open-fire rules are unlawful.
