Senate committee passes bill that would protect Mueller

Rudy Giuliani, a strong supporter of President Trump, joined the legal team last week that's dealing with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe

Republicans have split as President Donald Trump repeatedly criticized Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Currently, the bipartisan bill's sponsors are Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Thom Tills (R-NC), Chris Coons (D-DE), and Cory Booker (D-NJ). We urge CHQ readers to call Senator Grassley's office (the toll-free switchboard number is 1-866-220-0044) tell him you think the Mueller witch hunt doesn't need protection, it needs to terminate immediately.

Now, McConnell must choose between keeping his promise to cover for Trump or following the will of the people who elected these senators, people who have promised massive resistance should Trump fire Mueller. "It's about the rule of law". "Given President Trump's statement just this morning that he may interfere with the special counsel's investigation, it's become even more of an imperative that Leader McConnell put this bill on the Senate floor for a vote immediately". Still, he warned that Trump's firing Mueller would have disastrous consequences.

"I don't think it would end the investigation".

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said it was silly to pretend that the legislation was not about Mueller. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Lindsey Graham of SC and Democrats Chris Coons of DE and Cory Booker of New Jersey — are hoping to win enough bipartisan support to move it out of committee.

Giuliani, a former U.S. lawyer and onetime mayor of New York Metropolis, joined Trump's authorized workforce final week and proclaimed his intent to deliver the Mueller investigation to a swift finish.

He also said that the bipartisan vote will send a message to Trump that interfering with the investigation is unacceptable.

Earlier Thursday, Trump again took aim at his Justice Department, suggesting Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and prosecutors were unfairly probing his campaign while overlooking other matters, and that he might soon take a more hands-on approach. However, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said Thursday that the committee will vote next week on a bill to protect the special counsel.

Committee Chair Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, acknowledged that some had concerns about constitutionality of the bill.

"It's going to be a tough row to hoe, but a farmer has to hoe a lot of tough rows", he said.

Republican opponents of the measure said that while they supported the independence of the Mueller investigation, they found the bill unconstitutional because it limits the president's executive authority.

Almost every Republican on the panel said they did not think Trump should take steps to fire Mueller.

Republicans have split on the issue amid Trump's repeated criticism of Mueller's Russian Federation investigation. Rosenstein - or his replacement if he were removed - has the power to fire Mueller. They urged the president to allow the investigation to continue.
