Simbine stuns Blake in 100m of Commonwealth Games

Blake, who is tied with Tyson Gay as the second-fasted man in the world behind Usain Bolt, was heavily favoured to win the race.

An image of the photo finish from the Men's 100m Final in the Commonwealth Games has prompted commentators to question whether the decision to hand Yohan Blake third place was the right call.

Simbine's win was least expected as pre-event favourite Yohan Blake had boasted of there "being plenty in the tank" after last night's semifinals.

Simbine, who was fifth at the 2016 Olympics and at last year's world titles, won in 10.03 second, with Bruintjies second in 10.17, shading Blake by 0.02. "I knew if I could put that together, the rest of my race would come together smoothly and I'd win".

Simbine said: "I wasn't focused on him (Blake), I was focused on myself and making sure I got out fast and that I got to the 50m as quickly as I could".

"Being able to run in lane 8-9 with Henricho, and placing first and second with him is fantastic", he said.

"I'm just hoping that this inspires the youngsters back home to get out and come to training in the belief that they can get to the stage where we are".

Ahye won her first gold medal at a major global meet, celebrating with an air punch as she crossed the finish line in 11.14 second and relegated Jamaicans Christania Williams (11.21) and Gayon Evans (11.22) to silver and bronze. "It's a big thing for South African sprinting and South African sport". England's Asha Philip was fourth. It came in the absence of the top Jamaican, Elaine Thompson, who won the Olympic 100-200 double in 2016 but is only running the 200 on the Gold Coast.

"Thanks to my country, my coach and my family". "It means a lot to me to represent Trinidad and Tobago".

New Zealand's world champion Tomas Walsh threw 21.41 metres to take the shot put gold, going one better than his silver at Glasgow.

A stumbling Blake struggled for balance and by the time he regained it, the race was over, leaving him disappointed with the bronze and a time of 10.19.

The women's 10,000m was dominated by East African athletes, as Stella Chesang (Uganda) topped in 31:45.30, followed by Stacy Ndiwa (Kenya), in a personal best of 31:46.36, and Mercyline Chelangat (Uganda) in 31:48.41. World and Olympic 800m champion Caster Semenya kicked off her bid for a Commonwealth double with a comfortable win in the 1,500m heats in four minutes and 05.86 seconds. Makwala, who was barred from competing in the world championships' 400m final in London previous year over illness fears, qualified fastest for the final with a time of 45.00 seconds. Javon Francis of Jamaica was next fastest at 45.38 and India's Muhammed Anas Yahiya reached the final by winning his heat in 45.44.

Canada's defending champion Damian Warner leads the decathlon with a total of 4,509 points at halfway.
