Trump welcomes emir of Qatar to White House

Amid Crisis and Scandal, Emir of Qatar to Meet Trump Tuesday

The UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt, cut off travel and trade ties with Qatar last June, accusing it of supporting terrorism and their arch-rival Iran. When the dispute started 10 months in the past, Trump sided with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and neighbors who accused Qatar of spreading extremism, fomenting regional unrest and permitting funds to move to terror teams.

A major twist in the Gulf crisis that has gripped the region over the past year appeared on Tuesday, when President Donald Trump welcomed the Qatar emir to the White House.

In a telephone name final week, Trump credited the emir with working to counter terror financing and extremism. Qatar has denied the charges.

Trump and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates agreed on Friday to push for unity among Gulf nations, the White House said, amid a bitter standoff between Qatar and other USA allies in the region.

Yet nearly a year later, the crisis has remained deadlocked, despite Qatar's efforts to address at least the US concerns, even allowing Treasury Department officials into its central bank. If there's one thing Qatar and its neighbors now agree on, it's that there's been essentially zero progress in resolving it, with both sides firmly dug in. As a key example of Qatar's efforts on counterterrorism, the State Department pointed out that in March, Qatar added roughly two dozen people and entities on its terror blacklist.

"The meeting will tackle a number of topics, notably promoting investment opportunities in the two countries, encouraging partnerships between businesspersons to stimulate commerce and contribute to economic development, introducing investment opportunities in the field of technology and telecommunications and strengthening economic relations between Qatar and Oman to stimulate creativity and innovation among the youth", he said.

The US State Department has given the green light to a $300 million sale of guided missiles to Qatar as Persian Gulf Arab states are stepping up purchasing state-of-the-art weaponry amid their diplomatic standoff.

"During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology".
