Watchdog confirms UK findings on nerve agent used on Russian spy

Daughter in Salisbury poisoning discharged from hospital: reports

The worldwide chemical weapons watchdog confirmed Britain's finding that a former Russian spy and his daughter were poisoned with a nerve agent, as Russia continued to deny suggestions that it was behind the attack. "We will now work closely with our partners to clarify grotesque use of this weapon and convene OPCW council to discuss next steps", Johnson said Thursday through a statement collected by Reuters. She said the Security Council meeting "will most probably be on Wednesday afternoon".

Russian Federation has consistently denied any involvement in the poisoning. The purity makes it hard to tell when the agent was manufactured, since without impurities it does not degrade over time.

Georgy Kalamanov, Russia's deputy minister of industry and trade, told Interfax news agency Thursday it's impossible to pinpoint the agent's origin and reaffirmed Moscow's demand for a probe that would involve Russia.

The OPCW report said the nerve agent used on the Skripals was "of high purity".

British authorities concluded that the chemical agent used was military-grade novichok, a chemical weapon developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Russian Federation denies any involvement, saying Britain hasn't provided evidence to support its assertion. "The name and structure of the identified toxic chemical are contained in the full classified report of the Secretariat, available to States Parties", the OPCW added.

According to the report, "the toxic chemical was of high purity".

The report puts beyond doubt that it was highly likely Russian Federation carried out the attack, people close to the investigation said, adding that the nerve agent could only be concocted in a very sophisticated laboratory by highly capable chemists who were familiar with the agent.

But it did confirm Britain's analysis about the substance that had been used.

"The chemical weapons watchdog did not explicitly name Novichok in its published summary, say where the poison may have come from or assign blame for the attack".

Russian Federation has said it does not have such nerve agents and President Vladimir Putin said it was nonsense to think that Moscow would have poisoned the Skripals.

Britain's Foreign Office says it has asked the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to publish a summary of its findings at midday on Thursday.

But Maria Zakharova, from the Russian Foreign Ministry, said the allegations in relation to the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal are a "clear anti-Russian campaign, the like of which we have not seen in the world for a long time in terms of its scale and lack of principles".

Russia's Embassy in London is questioning the authenticity of a statement attributed to one of the victims of a nerve agent attack in England, saying it has been crafted to support Britain's version of events.

Yulia, who was released from hospital on Monday, said in a statement she was suffering the effects of the poisoning, while her father remained seriously ill.

Yulia Skripal, 33, was released from the hospital earlier this week and transferred to an undisclosed "secure location".

A forensic tent covering the bench where Sergei and Yulia Skripal were found is repositioned by officials in protective suits in the centre of Salisbury on March 8.
