Alberto makes landfall in Florida; flash flooding reported

Alberto was located about 330 miles south of Apalachicola Florida early Sunday morning

Subtropical Storm Alberto has gained an early jump on the 2018 hurricane season, heading toward expected landfall sometime Monday on the northern Gulf Coast, prompting thousands to evacuate.

The subtropical storm, the first named storm of the season, is expected to spread tropical storm conditions along the west coast of Florida Sunday.

"A flash flood watch is in effect until early Wednesday for the Upstate/NE GA and until early Thursday for the mountains as at least 2-4" total of rain are expected to fall in our area, with locally higher amounts.

Mark Bowen, the Bay County Emergency management director, said Alberto's biggest threat would be its heavy rains, with forecasts of anywhere from four to 12 inches (10 to 30 centimeters) of rain in some areas.

Forecasters say heavy rains from Subtropical Storm Alberto could cause flooding across most of SC.

Between late Tuesday afternoon and sometime Wednesday morning, we will begin to see the remnants of Alberto start to affect our weather here in the mountains.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid 80s during the day and the mid 70s at night this week and the wind should be less than 15 miles per hour but as low as 7 miles per hour on Wednesday.

The storm was moving north at about 8mph (13km/h), the National Hurricane Center said. On average, the Columbia area receives almost 45 inches of rain annually. With it, Alberto brings winds that are over 60 miles per hour, and over a dozen inches of rainfall.

A storm surge watch was put into effect from Crystal River to the Florida/Alabama border, indicating the possibility of life-threatening inundation of storm water. It is still a subtropical storm, meaning that it does not have all of the characteristics of a purely tropical system and is more of a hybrid cyclone. Alberto could wind up dropping back down the Atlantic seaboard from the northeast by the weekend, he said. The rain could lead to flash floods and mudslides on the island. The Florida Keys were likely to get several inches of rain.

"The main concern from Alberto is flooding; not so much along the immediate coast, but inland, from the heavy rains that are coming on top of over a week of rain across the southeast", said Chuck Watson, a disaster modeler at Enki Research in Savannah, Georgia.

The one band of storms that moved through Volusia and Flagler counties Sunday morning delivered not quite a half inch of rain at Daytona Beach International Airport and anywhere from 1.3 to 1.5 inches of rainfall in parts of Flagler County, according to Skywarn spotters there.
