Britain's unmerited hostility to immigration is holding the country back

His father moved to Britain from Pakistan and worked as a bus driver in Bristol

Britain's interior minister Amber Rudd resigned on Sunday over an illegal immigration policy controversy, in a bitter blow to Prime Minister Theresa May days before local elections.

On Ms Abbott's call for protections to be reinstated, Mr Javid said: 'People who arrived pre-1973 - they have the absolute right to be here and that has not changed.' A Home Office hotline for those affected has received 2,500 calls and sorted more than 100 cases. My first priority is to make sure the home office does all it can to keep British people safe.

Mr Javid pledged he will do "whatever it takes" to put right the treatment of Commonwealth citizens, who have been wrongly denied access to benefits and healthcare or threatened with deportation despite living in the United Kingdom for decades.

"The most urgent task I have is to help those British citizens here that came from the Caribbean and make sure they are all treated with the decency and fairness they deserve".

Ms Rudd and her predecessor in the Home Office, Mrs May, implemented a "hostile environment" policy to deter illegal immigration by threatening residents with deportations and denying them healthcare, pensions and benefits.

In response, May said she believed Rudd had given her evidence to the House of Commons "in good faith" but that she understood her decision to resign and take "responsibility for inadvertently misleading the home affairs select committee". Mr Javid said he wanted to examine the removal targets in detail before deciding on their future. Subsequently, Theresa may apologized to the Caribbean countries that are part of the Commonwealth of Nations. To avoid deportation, was required to provide evidence that they were legally in the UK.

She said: "The Home Office is a very challenging brief and the size of the department and its complexity makes it hard to get things done".

Javid said Sunday that the Windrush scandal felt "very personal" but urged people to concentrate on the government's efforts to rectify the situation.

"As the son of a Pakistani bus driver, he is the first cabinet minister from this sort of background to rise to the Home Secretary's position".

West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion welcomed Mr Javid's appointment, saying he had a strong track record in government as both Business Secretary and Communities Secretary.

Javid has been the Member of Parliament for Bromsgrove, Worcestershire since 2010. He attended state schools and won a place at Exeter University, studying economics and politics.

Explaining the thinking behind Javid's appointment, May's spokesman said he was "one of the most experienced ministers" in Cabinet who had "proved his drive, his ambition and his determination to get to grips with hard subjects".

Similarly inspired by what he saw as a turnaround in the country's fortunes under the Conservatives, Mr Javid joined the party in 1988.

A Sky Data poll on Monday revealed voters are much more inclined to blame Mrs May for the Windrush scandal than her successor at the Home Office, Ms Rudd.

She also confirmed that a compensation scheme will be set up for people who have suffered loss or damages due to their inability to show they remained in Britain legally and to access services.
