Complaints vs Google, Facebook under new European Union law

GDPR has scuppered its first big players

The list of includes high-profile publications as The Los Angeles Times and The Chicago Tribune.

"You have to have a "yes or no" option", Schrems said in an interview recorded in Vienna before he filed the complaints in various European jurisdictions.

Many companies, like Twitter, have recently updated their privacy policies in anticipation of the new law.

The new General Data Protection Regulation - or GDPR - is coming into force on Friday 25 May.

Brown said many of her larger clients have been grappling with the legal and operational implications of the GDPR for 18 months or more, but others have only recently become aware that they need to be ready too. Its primal focus is on three key areas: privacy by design, consent for its use and personal data.

So unless the US and other countries adopt privacy rules similar to those in the EU- something that's not likely any time soon - many companies are likely to maintain double privacy standards.

The GDPR could even affect small tourism-related business such as a resort or tour operator, because they have guests from all over the world.

The don'ts: Companies must not ignore regulators' requests to fix GDPR failings, nor take more than 72 hours to report a security breach involving personal data.

The dangers of privacy breaches, cybercrime and misuse of persona data had led to beefed-up laws in the EU.

"It's a gradual and not a revolutionary kind of thing".

"Our new data protection rules were agreed for a reason: Two thirds of Europeans are concerned about the way their data was being handled, feeling they have no control over information they give online", he concluded.

The law also gives users far more control over their own data.

"Over the last 18 months, we have taken steps to update our products, policies and processes to provide users with meaningful data transparency and control across all the services that we provide in the European Union".

That said, European Union regulators are clearly going to tread softly on the enforcement front in the short term.

You also need to establish where the data came from, why you have it, where it is, who has access to it, who you share it with, whether it is protected and whether you still need it.

GDPR comes into force at the right time, with privacy and data protection now high on the political agenda thanks to a number of recent data governance scandals.

The right to rectification: This means you can change that personal data if it's incorrect.

For example, music streaming services such as Spotify create playlists for users based on their music preferences.

The right to erasure: You can remove all of the data a company has stored on you.

The regulations cover data protection and privacy for everyone in the European Union, European Economic Area, those travelling to the continent or doing business there. "Is it necessary for me?" said Julian Jaursch, of the Digital Society.

Earlier this month a survey revealed a disgusting complacency and lack of preparation among British businesses about GDPR.

"If it is possible to identify an individual directly from the information you are processing, then that information is personal data".
