Harvey Weinstein surrenders to police, faces rape charges

He has been charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct involving two separate incidences.

"This defendant used his position, money and power to lure young women into situations where he could violate them sexually", she said.

Weinstein's spokesman Juda Engelmayer and his lawyer Benjamin Brafman both declined to comment to Reuters on Thursday on the charges.

Someone inside asked me how Mr. Weinstein feels this morning, and my response was; 'As well as can be expected when you're accused of a crime that you vehemently deny having committed'. Weinstein's lawyer says he believes the movie mogul will ultimately be exonerated.

The other charge is related to an incident on March 18, 2013, where Weinstein allegedly kept a woman "physically against her will" at 569 Lexington Avenue and raped her, according to the Manhattan DA's office.

In the complaint, a New York Police detective stated that in 2004, Weinstein forced a woman to engage in oral sex with him, physically shoving her head downward.

"Mr. Weinstein will enter a plea of not guilty", Brafman told reporters, adding that his client "has always maintained that any sexual activity he engaged in was consensual".

Weinstein agreed to post the cash bail, CBC noted, surrender his passport, wear an electronic monitor, and not travel beyond the states of CT and NY.

Prosecutors in the office of the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., conducted dozens of interviews in NY and elsewhere and issued hundreds of subpoenas, and their inquiry is not over. "The NYPD thanks these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice", a spokesperson said. Vance also urged other survivors to contact them.

Harvey Weinstein has been arraigned on rape, criminal sex act and other sex charges stemming from encounters with two women.

More than 75 women have accused Weinstein of wrongdoing, and authorities in California and London are also investigating assault allegations.

Mr Weinstein was released on a $1m bail bond. That makes these first criminal charges against Weinstein possible. Today we are one step closer to justice.

The First Police Precinct station house, where Mr. Weinstein was arrested, was not unfamiliar to him.

Just before 9am Weinstein left the station in handcuffs and escorted by officers to head to a Manhattan court for arraignment. Handcuffed and silent, he ignored a a lineup of reporters snapping photos and shouting questions. After the hearing, Nicholas described Weinstein as "lumbering" out of the courtroom.

What would McGowan say to Weinstein if she were ever to come face-to-face with him again?

Brafman could soon be seen carrying Weinstein's passport, which he would later hand over to Illuzzi in court. "Because one win is a win for all of us", McGowan said Thursday night. "Today's charges reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation", District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. said. Over the years, journalists and investigators, chasing leads from a whisper network of women and a handful of complainants, tried to expose the accusations and hold him accountable, but came up empty. Wearing a dark jacket draped over a baby-blue sweater, he seemed unsure on his feet and offered a mile-long stare as he turned to face the gallery before the proceeding. "That is super cathartic for a bunch of the survivors, or even survivors who are not necessarily victimized by him".

The rape charge relates to a woman who was not identified and does not appear to be among the people who have told their stories publicly. "Rose McGowan, who became one of the most vocal leaders of the #MeToo movement after accusing Weinstein of raping her 20 years ago, spoke out on Good Morning America on Friday". He has been largely out of the public eye since dozens of women, about 80 so far, came forward last fall with a range of allegations. The revelations sparked a broader reckoning with sexism in Hollywood that has since touched other industries.

And he began to take aim at the accusations and accusers, noting that the alleged attacks weren't reported to police when they happened and suggesting potential jurors wouldn't believe the women.

Federal prosecutors have also started an investigation into the sexual-abuse allegations, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.
