'No Evidence' NBC Knew About Matt Lauer's Alleged Misconduct

Rose Mc Gowan told The Hollywood Reporter she refused to let NBC run her sexual assault story

McGowan also shed light on the dust-up between journalist Ronan Farrow and NBC News. Some of the women told Variety that they had complained about him to senior managers, but their complaints were ignored.

Nearly 70 current and former employees were interviewed in the investigation, led by NBCUniversal general counsel Kim Harris, many of whom reportedly "expressed shock" after reading the reports of Lauer's behavior, "including employees who spent significant amounts of time with" him.

The internal report, which worked with two outside law firms, found ultimately that no sexual harassment claims against Lauer had been submitted prior.

Even though Lauer was known for being "flirtatious" in the workplace, most witnesses reportedly "had positive things to say about Lauer's demeanor in the workplace".

"We were also unable to establish that any of those interviewed, including NBC News and "Today" leadership, News HR and others in the position of authority in the news division, knew that Lauer had engaged in sexual activity with other employees", the report stated. We can not change the past. Similar concerns regarding a lack of anonymity and fears of retaliation were raised about reporting complaints directly to management. The Washington Post also reported that Lauer's former "Today" co-host Ann Curry approached two members of NBC's management team after an NBC female staffer told her she was "sexually harassed physically" by Lauer.

One woman, who eventually came forward about a sexual encounter with Mr. Lauer, said she told a manager in 1996 about an interaction where Mr. Lauer "placed his hand on her thigh and made a sexually suggestive comment". "The members of NBC News and Today show leadership at the time with whom we spoke denied having any such conversation with Curry". The manager, who was not identified, agreed at the time to reassign the woman so that she would not travel alongside Mr. Lauer.

Investigators spoke to three other accusers about alleged incidents in 2000, 2001 and 2007, but did not disclose their nature or the names of the women. NBCUniversal Legal department records and HR records for both NBCUniversal and the News Division were reviewed, together with records from the Comcast NBCUniversal complaint helplines and web portal, to determine whether there were any prior complaints about Lauer.

In a separate note to employees also sent on Wednesday morning, news division chairman Andy Lack admitted that "the last few months have been extraordinarily hard".

"So how many women does it take to say he stole us?" The button closed the door, but didn't lock it, the report said.

In a section titled "Culture Assessment", the report states that "the investigation team found current and former NBC News and Today Show leadership, News HR, and others interviewed who were in positions of authority in the News Division to be credible in their denials of knowledge of Lauer's inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace".

NBC also addressed Lauer's now-infamous "button", a device under his desk that allowed him to close his office door without standing up. It recommended improved training, more communication from management, and improvements to employee complaint-reporting channels.

The statement continued, "A more effective way to make employees feel better, safer or more confident about coming forward with stories of misconduct is to make sure there is an independent investigation".
