The moment North Korea DESTROYS nuclear test site - before Trump cancelled summit

'A lot of dial tones': The inside story of how Trump's North Korea summit fell apart

The president also warned that the military forces of the United States are "more ready than we have ever been before", along with allies South Korea and Japan, should North Korea take any "foolish or reckless acts".

Trump indicated the summit could be salvaged after welcoming a conciliatory statement from North Korea saying it remained open to talks.

On Thursday, Trump called off his planned summit with Kim, citing "tremendous anger and open hostility" revealed in statements issued by ranking North Korean diplomats. It wasn't even clear that the two sides meant the same thing by "denuclearization".

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang was responding to a question about President Donald Trump's claim of a hardening in North Korea's attitude following a meeting earlier this month between its leader, Kim Jong Un, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Speaking later, Trump said the United States military stood ready if Kim were to take any "foolish" action and that the USA would continue its "maximum pressure" campaign of sanctions to press North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. That was far different from his letter Thursday to North Korea leader Kim Jong Un, blaming "tremendous anger and open hostility" by Pyongyang for the USA withdrawal.

On September 21, 2017, Washington unveils a raft of tough sanctions to curb North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile program, two days after Mr Trump's maiden speech to the UN General Assembly, in which he dubs Kim a "Rocket Man" on a "suicide mission".

The Trump team is trying to spin this as North Korea's fault.

In Pyongyang, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea's criticisms had been a reaction to American rhetoric and that current antagonism showed "the urgent necessity" for the summit.

North Korea issued a statement Friday saying it is still "willing to give the US time and opportunities" to reconsider talks "at any time, at any format".

Still, the Trump administration tried to keep up a positive face, dismissing the shifts as an expected negotiating maneuver by Kim and stressing there had been no official notification from the North of any change to the meeting.

"We express our willingness to sit down face-to-face with the U.S. and resolve issues anytime and in any format", they said in a statement.

In response to United States threats of regime change if diplomacy failed, North Korea returned to its usual heated rhetoric, singling out Vice-President Mike Pence and the national security adviser, John Bolton, for criticism. "You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used", Trump wrote.

The Pentagon said it is poised for any "provocative actions" by Pyongyang. "Some day, I look very much forward to meeting you". The president did not call South Korean President Moon Jae-in or Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to inform them of it, White House officials confirmed. -North Korea summit need to reflect on themselves rather than blaming others. South Korean president Moon Jae-in said he was "very perplexed" by the decision, and other world leaders expressed disappointment with it.

Just as soon as North Korea began playing hardball, Donald Trump took his toys and went home.

Following years of tensions, South Korea's hosting of the Winter Olympics in February 2018 gives the neighbors a window to reopen communications, ushering in a spectacular Korean detente. The next morning, he consulted with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton before deciding to scrap the summit. According to reports, US officials who traveled to Singapore for preparations last week were completely "stood up" by their North Korean counterparts. "This is unlikely to be the final word".

"Kim Jong Un was the person who brought China back into this - they were anxious they were being frozen out of the peace process right on their doorstep and Kim Jong Un played China off against America". Who knew dealing with North Korea was so hard?

It's uncertain where this leaves efforts to rein in North Korea's nuclear threat.
