Trump Still Open to Possibility of Summit with N. Korea

Donald Trump says US North Korea summit ‘could’ happen on 12 June

"The diplomats are still at work on the summit, possibility of a summit, so that is very good news", Mattis said.

Trump's letter issued a veiled threat to Kim, saying: 'You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray they will never be used'.

North Korea had sharply criticized suggestions by Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, and Vice President Mike Pence that it could share the fate of Libya if it did not swiftly surrender its nuclear arsenal. "He may be doing that, too".

Trump scrapped the meeting on Thursday after repeated threats by North Korea to pull out of the summit in Singapore over what it saw as confrontational remarks by US officials.

In his letter to Kim, Trump objected specifically to a statement from senior North Korean diplomat Choe Son-hui.

Major powers and allies around the world have called on both sides to maintain the diplomatic momentum and refrain from escalation.

Mr Pompeo previous year assembled a working group at the Central Intelligence Agency called the Korea Mission Center, which gradually assumed the lead role in talks with the North Koreans, and the group's director, a retired senior Central Intelligence Agency official with deep experience in the region, became the main United States interlocutor with Pyongyang. Focus will now swing back to how Trump will respond to the North's seemingly conciliatory gesture.

To be sure, North Korea's inclination to talk is always going to have an economic component: an opening to the United States could see sanctions removed, while a thaw with South Korea could help forge new economic connections. "We'll see what happens".

"They very much want to do it".

"Everybody plays games. You know that", he told reporters when asked about the ongoing talks.

Paul Lee, a former youth organizer, said Kim wants the meeting because "he needs to seek legitimacy". He also suggested it was possible Pyongyang realized it overstepped in its rhetoric when Trump canceled.

Following the meeting, US President Donald Trump said that he would hold a summit with the North Korean leader in "the coming weeks".

Trump later on Saturday tweeted that the summit, if it does happen, will likely take place on June 12 in Singapore as originally planned.

"It's like throwing a wedding together kind of overnight", he said.

"They were a little defensive about suggestions that we got ahead of ourselves on the summit", the person said, who described the administration's representatives on the call "genuinely hopeful" the summit would eventually happen.

Washington has made it clear it wants to see the "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation" of North Korea. Trump said on Twitter.

Mr Trump, speaking Friday to graduates at the US Naval Academy, did not mention North Korea directly, but he stressed the United States' military might.

The leaders of North and South Korea have met in the demilitarised border area between the two countries.

Still, his apparent willingness to continue diplomatic efforts does signal that Mr. Kim, 34, is under pressure to satisfy rising expectations in North Korea for economic gains and shake off the painful grip of sanctions. They have the backup plan.

North Korea is not known for its facility with flattery, but Kim's statement appears to have worked in restoring momentum towards a summit meeting.

It wasn't clear on Friday at what level U.S. officials were speaking with their North Korean counterparts, or whether they were discussing the possibility of putting a meeting between Trump and Kim back on the schedule. "It sort of read like his feelings got hurt in that process and that he wasn't able to shoulder that".
