Two black men arrested at Starbucks settle with Philadelphia for $1 each

Rashon Nelson left and Donte Robinson right both 23 listen to a reporter's question during an interview with The Associated Press in Philadelphia

Starbucks plans to close 8,000 cafes for a half day of anti-bias training on 29 May.

Two African American men arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks last month have reached a settlement with the city and secured its commitment to a pilot program for young entrepreneurs.

"I welcome the opportunity to begin a relationship with them to share learnings and experiences", he added.

Protests after two black men were arrested April 12, 2018, for sitting at a Starbucks cafe without ordering anything.

They've settled for a symbolic $2 gesture, along with the creation of a $200,000 grant to help young entrepreneurs in Philadelphia.

"And Starbucks will continue to take actions that stem from this incident to fix and reaffirm our values and vision for the kind of company we want to be".

In its statement on Wednesday, Starbucks said its agreement with Mr. Nelson and Mr. Robinson "would allow both sides to move forward and continue to talk and explore means of preventing similar occurrences at any Starbucks location".

He also revealed it was Nelson and Robinson's idea; he says they approached the city with the notion "in an attempt to make something positive come of this".

Kevin Johnson, CEO of Starbucks Coffee Company, said: "I want to thank Donte and Rashon for their willingness to reconcile". 'This was an incident that evoked a lot of pain in our city and put us under a national spotlight for unwanted reasons'.

Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson were arrested in Philadelphia on April 12, sparking worldwide outrage, protests at Starbucks outlets and anguished soul-searching about America's lingering problems of racial discrimination. According to the men, they arrived at Starbucks at 4:35 p.m. for the 4:45 business meeting. Nelson and Robinson will serve on the committee to award the grant; they will receive no payment for this work.

Robinson and Nelson were waiting for a business partner for a meeting in the restaurant, who came to the store as police led the men away.

As a result, the arrest of Nelson and Robinson sparked a heated debate over racial profiling in the United States.

Shortly after Nelson and Robinson told their story, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross personally apologized and said that if he had done anything to worsen race relations in the city, "shame on me".
